do you have track AND road jets?
-
• #60953
Neither. Sold all of my deep section wheels a while back when I no longer did the sort of rides that could justify them.
I did have a powertap rear for my roadbike for a while but I got fucked off with tubs.

Charge might be a bit much, but I am taking a days leave, and someone is coming down from Cardiff specifically to help them. I was thinking £200, mainly to cover the fuel bill.
What do you think?

Shitty balls.
As some of you know I am selling one of my old road bikes.
I was just giving it a clean before its first test ride and noticed this doozy of a something on the top tube. I can't decide whether it is a crack or a scratch.
What should I do about making sure this is just cosmetic? I do not want to sell a cracked frame to anybody.
The frame has been used on a turbo all winter, mostly with high resistance. Could this fuck with the top tube?

tl;dr?
£200 is fine.

doppelkorn,
many thanks. I'll start at £300 and see what they say.

If I had to drive out west on the A4 on a weeknight, when's the 'bulk' of the peak hour crush of despair end?
-
• #60959
There's 3 minutes between the end of the rush and the start of whatever fucking closure due to collapsing flyovers is going on that night.
-
• #60960
Haha
Okay, if you were gonna do that drive and could choose when to leave to avoid the bulk of the stop/start shit but wanted to arrive in Newbury as early as possible, when would you go?
-
• #60961
Hippy - where you leaving from?
Southall to Twyford about an hour, plus rush hour madness.
The A4 is pretty solid until M25. M4 also solid, but clears a lot earlier, then gets manky again about the M25.
If I HAD to get there at 6, I'd leave Southall at 4, and probably arrive at 5.30.
Obviously you can't get train?

Have it assessed by a mechanic in a reputable shop. The small charge for this service will be negligible compared to the frame cost.

What's the starting point? What's the earliest you can set off?
The trouble is, it's so unpredictable. I've done W1-Slough in under an hour at all sorts of times, but equally taken 2 hours at any start time from 3pm to midnight.

Hi all,
I am gathering loads of info from the forum, but I have a couple of questions abour a specific model that I can't find anything about... I am posting them here as I can't create any new thead just yet. I hope that's alright.
I am thinking of getting this bike:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/langster-2014-track-bike-ec053036However, I am using now a semi destroyed old SS, in a 42x16 setup (had to count the teeth, I never needed to know this before:) )and with a recent injury in my knee, I am considering something slightly lighter.
The new bike comes with a 48x17 setup, so using Sheldon's brown calculator (hey, a few days ago I didn't know who he was, or what a gear ratio was!!!!!), I am thinking of swapping the sproket for a 19T or even try with a 20T and then move slowly up.The wheelset is AXIS Classic Track Fixed Wheel, but I can;t find any info about the rear hub.
- Can anyone confirm if the hub that comes with it is a flip-flop? I've read contradictory opinions in several places.
- Also, can someone confirm that the threaded is standard 1.375x24TPI , so I could use something like this: http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/SKOOCHRTC18/on-one-cnc-chromoly-screw-on-track-cog-1-8in ??
- Assuming it is a flip-flop in the end, I would like to add a freewheeler as well, although finding 20T free wheel sprockets seems difficult, whereas a 16 or 17 can be found anywhere. Why is that? are they not standard? Am I missing something?
-And last but not least, If someone has a good or bad opinion about this bike, I would love to hear any comments.
Thanks a lot in advance!!!!

So apparently taxes can be refunded on flights you don't make. However, often there is service fee to get them back. In my case, however, Icelandair is claiming that by not flying both legs of my journey, the first leg is retroactively more expensive, and they're using the taxes to pay for that increase in cost.
Any thoughts on the legality of this? Seems sketchy.

You guys have built an amazing community! The wheelset is not flip-flop, you only get one 17t track cog. Yes, the on one cog will be fine. You can get a 20t freewheel cog, they're just not that common as people are massive blouses about spinning. The polo players of the forum will likely be able to suggest a good place to pick one up. You'll regret getting a track bike if you want to run a flip-flop hub. I ride a Langster and it's great, but I ride one of the models that came out before Specialized went full-on tracktrastic, so mine has a flip-flop hub with a freewheel on one side. If I were buying a new bike now I'd probably go for a Fuji Feather or a Charge Plug instead purely for the freewheel option.

SJS Cycles do cheap and decent Sturmey Archer 20t freewheels.

Brilliant, thanks a lot!.
So having only one cog, can it still be a freewheel, or does it accept only fixed track ones? It's a shame that that you need to choose only one:(
Unfortunately in evans don't have the Fuji feather on my size, and I'm tied to the ride to work schema with them.
What about the Fuji 2.1 track? it is a bit flashy for my taste, and some reviews out there complain about some details, but I could live with that... Is that one any good? And does it come with a flip flop hub?Cheers!

You should use a track cog on a track hub. Have a read of the answers on this page here, they explain how the two different systems work: http://bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/11269/how-do-i-change-my-single-speed-to-a-fixed-gear
The Fuji 2.1 track will have the same problem, in that it's fixed-only (don't look for a single speed bike in the "track" section!). What about a Genesis Flyer? That has a flip-flop fixed/free hub: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/genesis/flyer-2014-singlespeed-road-bike-ec055507

I've booked flights before where the two legged return was £500 cheaper than a single so it's not that surprising (I booked a return and only used the first leg, you can't do it the other way round as if you don't use the outbound then they'll cancel the return).
Have a look on the Icelandair website to see what the single flight cost is. If it's more expensive then you're probably screwed.

Ealing to Newbury, two people, two bikes. Maybe A40/M40 is better?
-
• #60972
No, A40 is never better unless you are going towards Oxford.
Allow two hours, expect it to take one and a half. From Ealing get on the M4 asap and go.
There is no "window" unfortunately. I've also done it via the M3, but that is more fucked up than the M4.
The A30 is a good compromise to get you past the M25, but the M4 is the only way after then. But TBH as soon as you get past the M25 then everything returns to normal.
Sorry mate

I'm certain the price would be more expensive (for a last minute, one-way, flight vs the return booked a couple of months in advance), but I bought two tickets at the price they quoted me. They get the money, fair enough. I'm wondering about the legality of taking money paid as taxes to line their own pockets once those taxes no longer need to be paid.

Hey bothers, if it's a screw on cog you can put a freewheel on it (as someone says in the thread you linked to!), it's fixed on a freewheel tread that's a bit questionable (but even then...), or have I got the wrong end of the stick?
-
• #60975
No, you're right, you can. But like incest and country dancing, just because you can doesn't always mean you should :-)
I think on most hubs it's fine, but on some the fixed hub has fewer threads. It depends on the hub, though. If I were buying a bike new I'd want to just get a fixed/free hub in the first place instead of fannying about worrying over whether the freewheel was ok or not. But, y'know, that's me, other people don't mind so much.
I find H3s and Jets rather functional and useful for their purpose.
So you want to spend £300 on a rear wheel to go with your front Halo? My suggestion would still be to get somebody to build you a DP18 up if you're just commuting on it.
