Actually, I was thinking of Jeez rather than tommy on the 'endless streams of internally-contradictory stream-of-consciousness cockwaffle' front. I don't have tommy on ignore yet, as his incoherent ramblings are, on balance, still very slightly more entertaining than annoying.

Have you searched the forum for the transmission database? Nothing on velobase?

I seem to recall that's a no due to the structure of the ignore function being something of a hack.

Any suggestions for a pub in Richmond that will be showing the boxing tomorrow night (I don't know Richmond at all). Cheers.

I might go to Madrid for a 6 month exchange to the university, but I am afraid that cycling there will be bad. Last summer when I toured to there I didnt ride much when I was there, but I remember entering the city and getting to my destination was a real PITA. Anyone here can convince me cycling in Madrid can be good? Would be amazing to be there for a couple of months. Maybe I'll take the opportunity to go two months early and work as video game tester at EA Games. But I wanna be able to ride properly...

I am used to a 170mm crank. Due to the set up I want to run, the chainset I need is only available in a 175 as it is discontinued. How will this effect the ride? Will it be very noticeable? Thanks.

• #60535
It'll be fine.
-
• #60536
Unless you have very short legs and 170mm is already the longest possible crank you can use without injuring yourself.
-
• #60537
Ha, no, I'm a 32" inside leg. Should be fine then? thanks.

This is getting frustrating. I wanted to run a square taper BB but can only find octalink. All the decent square taper chansets seem to have been discontinued. For longevity, ease of servicing, is octalink as good?
-
• #60539
No, Octalink is on it's way to the graveyard of bad ideas. Square taper will probably be around long after Octalink and ISIS are forgotten.
-
• #60540
Oddly, Shimano are dragging out it's protracted death by making the new Claris use it.
-
• #60541
Yeah, I had a feeling it was shit. I think I might have found a square taper alivio... so far two places have sold me one then emailed to say sorry we don't have it, would you like the octalink instead. Grrr.
-
• #60542
^^^Why is octalink any worse than square taper? I was under the impression it wasnt that bad seeing as it's used in the fc-7710 which is quite popular and used by pros.
-
• #60543
It's fine for a track BB which has an easy life, being used for a relatively short amount of time and usually in ideal environmental conditions. The problem with Octalink and ISIS is that cramming a 22m axle inside a 33mm ID shell leaves very little room for bearings, and thin bearings don't last long, especially when you dip them in muddy water.
-
• #60544
ah, ok thanks
-
• #60545
Yep. Shitty octalink bearings would kind of defeat the object of my durable 8 speed touring build.
-
• #60546
Octalink wasn't that bad, but it was an a bridging technology. It would be interesting to see a bike developed ignoring all the standards.

Whats wrong with second hand chainsets?

This is the freehub I got just for reference: HSFH-CP-CCL Planet X Hub Freehub Body Campagnolo Fits 52mm, 60mm Carbon Clincher And CT45
If it works with the Flo hubs then I'll update this.

^^ they're worn? Might as well start off with brand new teeth / square taper interface. I have looked at some old ones.
