  • anyone know what this gold thing is in relation to an iphone 4s, and where it goes?

The fact that it's gold makes me think it's to do with the audio jack but I've never owned an Apple product so dunno.

Might it be the microphone connection for the audio-jack? For in-line ones

  • It's a small grounding finger for the rear facing camera.

Found out where to put it. The phone powers up. I was so chuffed.... until I realised that something was missing:

  • Ahh sorry they're Altus, from about 1996 I would guess. Looks very similar to Acera.

They will work fine, we fit Acera V brakes on customer's old MTB that was booked in for a full service (work out cheaper than putting new pads in).

  • Is there something like a cheap groupset for a roadbike that's still decent?

  • 105 5700.

  • I saw the 105 5700 before but it's still really expensive. Even webshop prices start around 450 euro's. And it's an alloy frame. Considering the price of the 105 group it's cheaper to buy another bike and throw this frame away.

You fit v brakes onto old Acera lever/shifters?

    Ribble have them for £300.

Get downtube shifter and run 8 speed if you're that tight.

I don't, mechanic do, work perfectly fine, hardly any noticeable difference.

  • Cheers Ed, I'll give it a go now. That was exactly the type of response I was hoping for.

Claris with SL-R400 downtube levers and BL-R400 brake levers is only going to be just under £200, an extra £100 to upgrade to a complete 5700 groupset looks like a bargain.

  • Anyone know if the New Cross big Sainsbury's has a clothes bank?

  • friend of mine measured 183cm (6') height and 90cm inseem (35.5"). i come out at a 61cm frame? isn't that huge for someone that's not that tall?

  • Trying to pick a frame based on just those two dimensions isn't even up to #internetbikefit standards :-)

  • he needs to know the size of the frame so he can get an old road bike frame.

  • mdcc thanks for the tip on the groupset. i'll probably buy another roadbike, remove all the parts from it and put it on this frame. I'll end up with a cheaper roadbike.

  • he needs to know the size of the frame so he can get an old road bike frame.

Yes, but trying to guess what size to buy from just height and inside leg is the wrong way to go about it.

Take him to a reputable bicycle shop instead, and let him try out a couple of bicycles to find out which one feel like a better fit.

Don't worry, I'm sure he'll do the arm plus hand reach measurement that's an ironclad way of getting the perfect fit.

  • I've never seen a bike shop measure people before XD

  • They don't measure people, they get them on a couple bicycle in different sizes to see which look like the best fit.

  • yeah that's probably best, but he can't afford a bike from a bikeshop and I think that wasting their time is also a bit unfair.

  • Buy a gear cable on your way out. Or take some beer.

  • yeah that might work.

  • Or take a full set of anatomical measurements and apply one of the bike fit calculators to set out the fit triangle, then overlay that onto any frames available and see which ones can be set up to fit without abnormal components.

If it's under just £200, might as well go Sora, surely you can mix-match some MTB component to keep the cost down further?

  • mdcc, I'll do a combination. beer and a bike shop isn't a bad start of the weekend. I know the brand the owner of my LBS drinks.
