  • I really hate wearing any type of jewellery - I can just about manage a watch but can't be bothered with rings, chains or anything else.

I'm getting married but don't really want a ring but can't think of an appropriate alternative. Any ideas?

Congrats - someone mentioned rings aren't required in non-religious ceremonies? If you're talking Judeo-Christian there are none required for those either.
When we had our first meal as a family (not really a ceremony - there were no authority figures involved) we didn't exchange any rings, just promises.
I'm still the only one with a ring, in my ear.
Do what you like, it's the new millennium!

Congratulations - of course announcing it is an invitation to all and sundry to give unsolicited advice...

You only get the one opportunity to exchange rings when you marry - not having one and then changing your mind later isn't the same. I'm not a jewellery wearer beyond a wristwatch at work, but somehow a wedding ring is different. Originally I thought I'd just wear mine on special occasions - now I seem to wear it all the time.

Use a decent jeweller and try a few different designs - unless money is a major issue*, it can sit in a drawer against the day you think it's a good idea or find there are social issues with the matching butt plugs.

    • The price of a ring as a proportion of the total cost of a wedding?
  • Is there a union for general office peons?

I work in a great design office, but considering the first person to be hired by the company got a 'thanks, but don't come back on Monday' last week, I am feeling like a bit of union muscle might not be a bad investment.

  • Ha. Let us know how you get on.

    Try searching this:

    http://www.certoffice.org/nav/Trade-Unions/Active.aspx?letter=all

Number of members (follow the 'publication' links for any given union) might give you some idea of level of influence.

  • Are there any adapters out there to allow you to mount other things on a Garmin mount (the quarter turn one for the 800, etc)?

Yes, there's a SRAM adapter that fits the old Garmin Edge 205/305 etc. onto quarter turn mounts. It's s pretty solid bit of plastic, I'm sure it would be amenable to a bit of hacking to repurpose it for something else.

  • Cheers, now ordered ready for some bodging.

  • United Pixelworkers?

looks like they mostly sell t-shirts. In America.

Don't think that qualifies as a Union.

Perfect, found mine. Association of Somerset Inseminators.

  • Castelli Bibs v. Assos Bibs - I'm a Large in a Castelli. Would I be a Large in Assos?

  • Considering how expensive Assos is, you probably won't have any money left for food, so no.

    • The price of a ring as a proportion of the total cost of a wedding?

Both of these tend to be outrageous anyway - fuck 'em.
Your wedding day will be meaningful in retrospect only in relation to the people that shared it with you, not the band on your hand or the bill that you will to your children.

  • Ours was very limited - two sets of parents, one sibling, two rings, and calling the next foreign holiday 'honeymoon'. With 20 years hindsight I still think it was right for us.

It's the kind of thing where all manner of boring old farts (self included) will have an opinion and think theirs was the best way of doing it - given one opportunity to get it right, it's worth thinking through rather than just doing what other people want.

  • the next foreign holiday

    Boast post.

  • Absolutely

    pre recession...

  • Castelli Bibs v. Assos Bibs - I'm a Large in a Castelli. Would I be a Large in Assos?

Evans Cycles in the Cut have some Assos last I remember, and Condor too, worth trying it out there?

Personally I would stick with Castelli, unless the Assos have a very noticeable difference.

  • What's the best way to pack drop handlebars to post?

    (alu not carbon)

  • Castelli Bibs v. Assos Bibs - I'm a Large in a Castelli. Would I be a Large in Assos?

Very likely - although Assos bibs fit more based on height.

I am a Medium/Large in Assos (S5 - not sure if it has changed at all for S7) and medium in Castelli.

I think there was a post on the Rapha thread basically saying that the large Assos seem to fit 90% of the people on here :)

Surround them with cardboard poster tubes so the box is less crushable.

  • Is there an app or gmail labs or something that can automate the following diary workflow.

I create an event in my diary.
    Then at the minute I am manually creating reminders for the following;

    • 12 weeks before - issue contract
    • 6 weeks before - pre event questionnaire
    • 2 weeks before - invoice
    • EVENT
    • 1 week after - expenses invoice
    • 4 weeks after - issue the images
    • 6 weeks after - feedback form

The workflow and client touchpoints are slightly different for different types of event.

It feels like it should be possible to automate it
I create a profile for EVENTS and define the diary dependencies and time intervals
Then when I add a diary entry under EVENTS it drops them all in place

There are a couple of alert manager things about but the problem seems to be I am looking for reminders after the event too.

  • https://ifttt.com/ might be able to do all of that.
