  • You could use a disc/free hub with a bolt on fixed cog, but the surly one would probably be better.

    Cheers.

Do you actually need the flip/flop aspect?

Yes, it would be quite had to flip between fixed & ss without it.

  • Yeah staple your duvet cover together before washing, to stop socks getting in. Haaaa.

  • Get someone else to wash it.

  • How can I stop a star-fangled nut from rising up inside the steerer, preventing adequate tension, when I tighten the top cap bolt?

  • ^ Note:

    • The fork originally came with an expander plug thing like this.
    • I'm using 1⅛" star-fangled nuts in a 1⅛" steerer.
    • I'm not over tightening the star-fangled nuts.
    • I've two tried star-fangled nuts and both slide up.
  • Assuming this is an aluminium steerer, in which case get a hope head doctor.

  • Thanks James. That's definitely worth a shot.

Tired of re-tightening your headset? So are we.
To combat this common problem we have produced an engineered solution. Two aluminium wedges simply pull together and expand inside any size steerer giving you a solid thread to pull the stem down. Sounds simple? It is.

  • How can I stop a star-fangled nut from rising up inside the steerer, preventing adequate tension, when I tighten the top cap bolt?

If you're applying that much tension to the bolt, something else is wrong. The pull-out force of a star nut is at least one order of magnitude higher than the preload required on a properly installed headset.

  • A common problem is that the steerer hits the top cap when you apply the preload, if it was quite close when assembled loose. Once the steerer is pressing on the cap, no amount of bolt tightening will close up the bearing clearances of the headset. Try an extra spacer under the top cap.

  • It could be that I've not installed the star nuts so well; they slide back up with very little effort from the bolt/allen key.

  • Inverse lube.

  • Thanks for the advice, Tester. My girlfriend has the bike at work so I can't investigate but I'm 99.999% certain that the steerer wasn't hitting the top cap.

It's been about a year since we built the bike and experienced this problem, at the time I managed to get just enough tension for the headset in the end. However, it's now loose and I just know any attempt to tighten it will likely result in the bike being unrideable. It's a daily commuter so I think I'll wait for the head doctor before faffing with it, just in case!

  • Inverse lube.

aka glue. If the start nut is slipping, there's no harm in cleaning everything up (brake cleaner spray might be handy if you don't want to dismantle) and then binding the whole lot up with a shot of Araldite®

  • Anyone had a news agency contact them re. permission to use pics on social media they want to punt to papers as a "news" story that then ends up in most of todays online tabloid press? (specifically the Range Rover pics from The Epic Fail thread)

I have an email saying I'll get 50% of what the pics make so have I been ripped off for money I never would have seen in the the first place?

  • Carbon steerer... Does it have to have a carbon steerer bung or can I use a star fangled nut? I know the convention is bung but I've seen exceptions to the rule. Is it safe to nut? Obviously a question for tester...

  • A star nut would put large stress points on it. Has to be a bung

  • Cervelo (and maybe others) supply a metal sleeve which you glue inside your steerer after cutting it. The star nut fits into that, so it never touches carbon. That is the only circumstance in which it is permissible to use a star nut inside a carbon steerer.

  • Cheers tester. Repped.

  • So in theory you could obtain one of these sleeves, if you're not happy with the bung approach..

  • So in theory you could obtain one of these sleeves, if you're not happy with the bung approach..

I was hovering over the "pay now" button. Carbon bung ordered.

  • So in theory you could obtain one of these sleeves

In theory. Since forks all have different wall thicknesses, you'd need one specifically sized for your particular fork. If you're going to have one made to fit, you might as well get the nut integrated into it and save the hassle and weight of the crude star nut

I've got fucking millions of them, to which anyone who wants one is welcome.

  • aka glue

Pretty much what I was getting at.

  • But without being a dick.

  • This maybe a stupid question so shoot me down.

Can I run a 1inch thread less fork and headset with a 22.2 quill stem?
