Just building my All City Big Block and it seems I need a long drop front brake. Frustrating. Anyone know where I can buy one today, and what's best to go for? Tektro?
-
• #55653
Tektro are best value, but you might find a Shimano BR-R451 easier to get as a single caliper and in a shop.

I don't want Shimano on this bike. I'm a bit annoyed already that I need a long-drop; why do that on a track bike?
-
• #55655
why do that on a track bike?
Because versatility:
Instead of the usual 25c max tire clearance, you can fit 32c cross tires
As cheap steel track irons go, it doesn't really make it any worse to have slightly bigger clearances, and it lets you put proper sized tyres on it for road and even off road fun.

Fair point. How about this one?

Well, if you must, but you can get R451s for under £20 including postage, so you're paying the best part of a tenner extra for a worse brake just to avoid one Shimano logo.

Ever the pragmatist, Tester. Fair point.

It's meant for Vs but it'll work with cantis right?
-
• #55660
Cable pull ratio will be wrong, why not use V-brakes? They fit on the same studs, and work better, easier to set up, less likely to snag on stuff, don't need hangers, eliminate the flexy-steerer induced chatter etc.

Already got nice cantis. Do they make sti shifters for cantis?
-
• #55662
Not integrated ones, but they do make flat-bar brake levers* for cantilevers and separate shifter pods.
*BL-R440 or BL-R770

• #55663
I was hoping for an sti but the BL-R440 looks really neat with a shifter pod.
Thanks Tester. -

Actually, there is an 8-speed Sora flat-bar STI with adjustable pull ratio to allow either V-brakes or cantilevers, but no 9 or 10-speed equivalents as far as I can see

What price would be fair for my crabon wheels that would get them sold?
Those 20-odd mm clinchers from a few months back?
-
• #55667
Ultra light and compressable, yet warm jackets not cycling specific. Ive read on here somewhere about a brand that does those but cant remember...

No, my well used but excellent condition 60mm front/90mm rear tubular track wheels.

Hello I have a question. Why does people like surly so much? here is comparison of two frames for sale I have been browsing here, both 200, but one is standard cromoly, and the other is 853. To me, the 853 is worth much more, but the market place seems do disagree.http://www.lfgss.com/thread100905.html

I think it might be down to the versatility of the Surly.
Fenders, racks and general abuse are encouraged. -

Has anyone here repaired a cycling cap before? My lfgss one is warped and cracked and I would quite like to revive it.

Have a look at the sewing thread - some cap repair discussion there.
great - thanks
