  • ^Try applying to a small test patch inside the bag, normally wax dressings will darken the material a bit.

  • I have H plus Archetype rims. I changed my tyres last week and have had two punctures in as many days after not having one for ages. When I changed the tyres, I noticed that the cheap bike ribbon rimtape wasn't really wide enough for the internal channel so had in places slipped about and creased. I'm wondering if the creasing and moving about is likely to have given me a couple of pinch flats. When changing the first puncture, I looked carefully and couldn't see where anything had gone through the tyre. I inflated the tube and it deflated really slowly through the tiniest of nicks.

So, what new rim tape in what width? Stans? Velox?

  • Where was the puncture? On the inside or outside of the wheel?

  • Where was the puncture? On the inside or outside of the wheel?

Inside. A tiny hole in the tube, only apparent after inflating the tube to comical proportions.

  • The Archtype rims would required MTB/hybrid rims tape rather than standard, is your a 13mm wide one?

Did the pinch happened where the tape creased?

Did the pinch happened where the tape creased?

Yes the tape is standard 13mm

Puncture location: quite probably, or where a spoke hole has been exposed. The tape is slipping about and creased in more than one spot and I wasn't sufficiently rigorous to note the location of the puncture in relation to the valve and then refer back to the wheel. I just changed the tube as per usual.

Am I best with a roll of mtb rimtape that is adhesive backed and cut to length?

  • Where do I get Speedplay KeepOn Kovers in London?

  • I bought some Halfords pedals a couple of weeks ago (had a voucher to use up), and to be able to ride home got them fitted in store (possible big mistake). Having ridden since then for less than 100 miles, the pedal came loose and upon removal, the pedal threads in the crank have been stripped. Halfords claim that 'cranks threads can just strip if you put a new pedal in', and then tried to shrug it off as the cranks as being crap (they're Sugino RD2s so hardly top of the range, but decent enough for a beater).

    So:
    a) Why do crank pedal threads strip? Is it predominantly down to bad installation?
    b) Do I have to bite the bullet and buy new cranks, and probably a new BB, or should Halfords have any responsibility to replace the crank/cranks if it is their fault (can't really prove).
    c) Does anyone have a LH Sugino RD2 (or other JIS) crank knocking around spare. 170mm I think, although I need to double check that.
    Cheers.

  • I would say misthreaded or the previous pedals had already damaged the thread. Hard to say.

Was the pedal greased before install? Did you do it or someone else?

  • Yeah I asked which grease they used, and they claim they used standard lithium grease. It was done by a Halfords 'mechanic' as I wasn't allowed to go into their workshop, which is in the back room of their store.

Also the threads were fine when given to them.

  • I might have a similar crank, it'll be old school Suntour. Will have to check when I get home tonight.

  • I'd definitely be chasing them to cough for a new crankset if it were me, I'm assuming you paid them to fit them?

  • this is what CAB has to say about the same thing with cars.

    http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/wales/consumer_w/consumer_cars_and_other_vehicles_e/cars_garage_repairs_and_services_e/your_vehicle_is_lost_stolen_or_damaged_at_the_garage.htm

obviously it's comparing apples and oranges but indicates that the responsibility should lie with them at least in principle and they would be an insured garage I imagine.

  • a) Why do crank pedal threads strip? Is it predominantly down to bad installation?

    Hole in one.

  • I didn't pay to fit them as i'd just bought their pedals new, and it's an 'inclusive service' apparently. When I went in to question their installation, they offered to fit a new crank for £5.99, which suggests to me a guilty conscience. Having looked at that CAB link HatBeard, I think i'll go in and try and get some replacement cranks (the one they were offering was a generic one, but i'm a bit fussy and would quite like matching cranks), as it does appear to be their mistake.

Cheers for the responses as well all.

    Glue in a custom-sized nut :-)

I've got a spare 23.9mm diameter, can't remember whether that was for the Cervelo or the Look.

  • A source of spoke washers please.
As in pop in to the shop and pick a few up.
    In London.

  • The Bicycle Workshop on All Saints Road, W11. (If you're a westie.)

  • Thanks 36x18. I've just picked up a some from lmnh.

  • Any suggestions on the best place to get MS Office (2010 or 2013, 64 bit)? The full program, not a year's subscription, only need Excel and Word. Googling it seems to bring up a whole variety of possibly dodgy vendors (Vegascart for instance appears cheap but has a name that doesn't inspire me with confidence).
