Avid BB7s are utter shit. Difficult to set up and forever going out of adjustment. Complete and utter waste of money.
I have hayes mx-2's on my MTB and they have served me well, havent actually used avid's myself but heard great reviews on em at the time I bought my hayes ones.
Perhaps you are suffering from user error?
I had hope mono's on my other mtb (the newer version) so im comparing the cable operated with those. The hayes were just as reliable, just slightly less strong. This however could be down to the hope brake having larger rotor.

They weren't progressive enough, that was the main problem.

Could you use beer in the hydraulics of these BB7 brakes?
-
• #5540
Wait. They're not hydraulic are they?

Something made from Ti, with gears, expensive ones. Sell your cat to fund it.
-
• #5546
If I could pay in old bricks I could afford Ti everything, GBP not so much

The IRO website says my 62cm Mark V (which seems to fit perfectly) has a seat tube length of 56cm and a toptube length of 59cm.
So when I look for a 2nd hand road bike should I be looking for a 62cm one or 56cm? I assume I just want something with a TT thats close to 59cm?

Most road bikes with a 59cm top tube will be sized 58cm, so that's what you need to look for.
I'm actually making popcorn in the office.
