  • Contre jour?

  • Contre jour?

    This is proper photography technique usually to make silhouettes.. I think he's looking for the hipster saying for screwing up by shooting into the light. Must say I havent a clue.

  • No contre jour was what I meant.

    It seemed to be very popular with 'those types' just as I was finishing my photography degree but I just couldn't remember the term

  • I just bought a pair of Ultergra 6700 levers to replace my old beat up Dura-Ace 7800 ones. Ditching those unsightly cables in the process.

    When fitting the new shifters, will it be just a case of removing old shifters an inner cables and installing the new ones? Ie can I use the original outers? And will it be tricky to get the gears adjusted to suit?

  • Isn't 6700/7900 the point where they changed the pull ratio of the front mech, so ST-6700 shifters won't work with FD-7800?

  • If replacing the levers anyway, then surely it is an ideal time to replace the inners AND ?outers You can reuse the outers if you want, but generally I would replace them if you can afford it.

  • If you're switching from 7800 to 6700, you're going to have to redo the bar tape anyway, so you might as well change the inners while you're there.

  • Isn't 6700/7900 the point where they changed the pull ratio of the front mech, so ST-6700 shifters won't work with FD-7800?

    I believe this is correct. So new cables and front and rear mech needed.

    Also given how much worn cables can affect shifting you really should recable all the things.

  • I thought it was just the front mech that needed changing, ST-6700 should work with RD-7800
    This chart says so, also shows ST-6700/FD-7800 as a combination which will work, but non-optimally, probably means you'll have to routinely use the trim function.

  • Need to order some contact lenses from the Interenet, anyone used any trustworth websites you could recommand?

    I found Asda to be the cheapest for the brand of lenses that I use.

  • So I am putting together a road bike for first time;
    The brakes are fine, adjusted and working.
    With the gears I've done following;

    1. Installed both derailleurs
    2. Installed the chain
    3. Did top adjustment for FD and RD with chain on small chainring and smallest sprocket
    4. Got a cable running through RD ..

    Now the issue is to make the low adjustment on RD I have to shift to largest sprocket but after 8 shifts I am running out of cable (cant shift any more) so what have I done wrong? Cable too short? Due to some routing error previously I may have shorter cable than needed. I can always buy new cable/inner.

    RD looks like this in the current position:

  • Was the shifter in highest gear when you set the cable up?

    Can you pull the cable by hand to get the chain to move to the lowest gear? Or is the low limit set incorrectly?

    And why does your brand new chain look so dirty?

    And why does your brand new chain look so dirty?

    Yes

    Cant pull by hand as there is not enough inner left so using pliers; I'll do the low limit setting again

    Its not new; this is the 6700 groupset I had on a bike that I am trying to shift over.

    Following this video: Shimano Ultegra 6700 Installation & Adjustment Guide on Vimeo

    Do I have to do both low and top adjustment of RD without installing the cable? According to shimano manual it says do top > install cable > do low. If this is not the case at which position should I install cable? Biggest sprocket + small chainring?

  • I often do the rear limit by hand before I install the cable or chain. The mech defaults to highest gear so adjust the screw so the jockey wheels line up with highest sprocket. Then push the mech over by hand to the low side and adjust the limit screw again so the jockey wheels line up with the lowest sprocket. Now connect the chain.

    Now the cable, ensure the shifter is set to highest gear. Wind the barrel adjuster all the way in and back it off by one turn. Connect the cable, pulling it finger tight and then do the pinch bolt. Now check to see if the first downshift works, and if not use the barrel adjuster to tweak it.

    One question, is the chain long enough? Or are the chain stays longer on the new bike?

  • aha! I may have found the issue. When I am at the highest gear at RD (smallest sprocket) I can still shift using the smaller lever so the shifter may not be in the highest gear when I installed the cable ... but i swear I did it more than 10 times before installing cable argh

    I determined chain length according to this video: How to Install a Shimano Road Chain - YouTube

    Stays are the same but this bike is running compact so I had to take out 4 links out.

  • So my first question was the right one?

    Hope it's all working now.

  • ^ yup;

    I can only do this when I get back home though. Will report back. Getting some gear cable just in case.

    If there is no cable tension pulling the spool, just moving the lever when you're near the top gear position doesn't necessarily engage the next ratchet point. Once you have an inner cable in place, pull on it while hitting the upshift lever to make sure you really are in top gear position.

  • Isn't 6700/7900 the point where they changed the pull ratio of the front mech, so ST-6700 shifters won't work with FD-7800?

    Yep, and the brake cable pull ratio.

    It'll probably be ok in practice but a proper pair of matching 6700 calipers will feel a lot better / sharper.

  • There's plenty of anecdote out there about mixing 1.3:1 levers with 1.4:1 calipers and vice versa, the consensus being that personal preference will be the determinant of whether you can live with the mismatch. Since he already has the ST-6700/BR-7800 combo, he might as well try it and change to BR-6700s if he doesn't like it.

  • How do I get my miles to register on the Rapha festive 500?

    I've registered on Strava (ugh) and uploaded my miles. I've registered on the festive 500 and got 0miles. I have a FB account which I don't use. Now what?

    Merry Xmas all!

  • It only counts miles ridden between tomorow and NY...

  • Nope starts on 24th

  • Wrong! It started today. Theoretically that should work...^^

    Edit: you beat me to it.

  • What was your average? If they are below the required average speed they won't register. That's the only reason I can think of.
