  • Right, well, yeah. More security is more security. It wouldn't hurt.

  • What if they're really long, a combination of lower and upper case, punctuations and numbers?

  • Short answer on security:
If you can access something, somebody else can access it too, or kill you trying.

All security measures are just ways to make it take more effort for the enemy to get at your stuff, and you can stop adding more security when either a: he doesn't think it's worth the effort or b: you would be better off letting it go rather than spending any more on security

  • Long answer on security:
Read Bruce Schneier's works on the subject

  • Thanks people. The idea of having files encrypted but stored online, password protected (eg. Dropbox) and then the encrypted version accessed and unencrypted by a person with a (perhaps physical/dongle) key for working on would be ideal as I see my co-workers regularly, but am tired of biking across town to deliver confidential documents late in the evening. If anyone really wants to access the files, there'll be easier and quicker methods than having me killed.

Email would then be surplus to requirements as all I'd need would be an unsecure email saying 'I've seen the documents, please access and proof-read'.

    BTW
    Incrypted - stored underneath a church? ;-)

  • what about using bit torrent sync?

  • I'd just use dropbox or similar and zip all the files with a password, is what you are sending so confidential that it'll be worth someone's time to break in? You'd basically have two layers of security from only allowing those few people dropbox access and then a password on top of that, if it ain't Snowdon level secrets or homemade celebrity pron that should be plenty.

  • Unfortunately it's not me that decides on how secure it has to be. These are confidential records/files/images and I would be a lot happier if they were encrypted whenever transmitted over, or secured on, the internet. As Tester said, passwords are not secure, no matter how apparently tricky they are to solve. A physical (eg dongle-based) key available to those permitted access would be ideal.

Of course the irony is not lost on me is that the current level of security for these files is a blue folder in my bag, protected only by Bob Jackson's finest steel, or alternatively a short walk into the office and a threatening conversation with a co-worker of mine.

The powers that be are of the mind that the internet is a dangerous abd subversive place to store information, but an open office and clearly-visible files is all just cool. Now THAT'S madness.

  • No, madness is posting detailed instructions on hijacking the physical documents on the Internet. So long as you don't do that you'll be fine :)

  • So transmitted over a secure line too, VPN or suttin?

  • No, madness is posting detailed instructions on hijacking the physical documents on the Internet. So long as you don't do that you'll be fine :)

Thank goodness I wasn't foolish enough to do that then. ;-)

I wish to discover, using mathematics, how far I would have to raise my stem to go from my current 100mm +10 degree to a 100mm 0 degree, or even a -10.

I know there is something simple with triangles I should be doing here but I'm drawing a blank.

  • I'm trying to track down the name of a piece of classical music which I heard the other day. It's really well known, but I've just trawled through a list of 'top 10 classical music melodies' and it wasn't on that, likewise the 'famous violin pieces' I listened through. The melody is easily recognisable, and I think it tends to be played on violin, certainly strings.

This is very unlikely to work, but the melody would look something like this:

    Dooby dooby doo do do
    Doo do do do
    Dooby dooby doo...

Even that much would be recognisable. Mega rep to anyone who can actually work that out!

  • There are no dooby doos in that^

  • Sorry, I was using Italian classical music terminology. Might have gone over some heads...

  • The piece is allegro, forza and the melody features dooby doos and doo-wops

  • Sorry, I was using Italian classical music terminology

    doo-wops

  • Is chainreaction's new site fucked for everyone or just me?

  • How fucked? Just went in and mobile version of the front page opens up for me.

  • Front page opens, can't actually get into their catalog; times out trying to search or open a category from the drop down menus.

  • Is chainreaction's new site fucked for everyone or just me?

Seems borked here too, but that's their fault for making a once decent site into a great steaming pile of shit

  • I've just bought some Cinelli Valencia bars that have a 24mm end diameter, and realised that none of my standard grips will fit. What are my options? I've never come across flat bars this diameter before - its a standard road bar size, right?

  • its a standard road bar size, right?

Well, 23.8mm is, which is the nominal size of Valencias
