  • Though maybe not the best before a big ride, would be more useful afterwards.

  • Boooo, pasta it is

  • "Is it a good or great idea to have steak tartare for dinner before a big ride tomorrow am?"

"It is always a good idea to eat steak tartare."

    Tru dat!

  • Q: Can I use a shimano wheel (i.e. cassette etc) on an otherwise campy 10sp set up for turbo use only?

I.e. as long as I just set the chain up somewhere with appropriate gearing, and don't attempt to change it, use the indexing etc, is there anything to stop it going round and round, or increase wear?

    Cheers

Using a 10-speed Shimano cassette, you should be able to get several different gears before the dérailleur is feeding the chain to the sprockets far enough off line to be annoyingly noisy. Obviously, only 9/10-speed Shimano will work, the sprockets will be too thick for the chain with lower sprocket counts.

I'm assuming you already have a Shimano wheel and cassette you want to abuse on the turbo, because if you're buying there are Campag options about as cheap as HG ones.

  • ^ I had considered appending "paging tester" to my post.

Yeah, a housemate has a battered unwanted but perfectly functional shimano rear lying in the shed. I figured that the incompatibility lay in the shifting not the chain and sprockets per se, just wanted a bit of confirmation! Thanks

  • Which London bike shop has silver 165 SRAM omnium cranks & bb in stock right now? Need to get them fitted on Thursday.

This is worryingly modern for you...

  • I was going to say, that doesn't sound like Skully at all.

Skully- you do know that Omniums don't use cotter pins?

  • Neither of you answered the question! >>>>>

Bit pissed off with tapered spindles, thinking of trying a two-piece instead.

  • Or should I get DA and a splined BB? I just want it to NOT FUCKING CREAK. Any recommendations?

  • Omnoms would be cheaper.

    DAs are nice though.

Neither will creak if installed properly

  • The BB's for DA are hard to find, and they are more of a pain in the arse to install correctly. You can of course just use 105 BB's.

I liked my pair, but I wouldn't buy them again.

  • Ta.

I know tapered cranks should be fine too. But more often than not I find they suck.

  • The BB for my Rotor track cranks is very nicely made- two steel cups with bearings pressed into them. Very nicely finished, everything goes together very smoothly.

Brixton Cycles ordered them for me, and fitted them- if you gave them a ring tomorrow morning they might be able to get a pair by Thursday?

Went for it anyway. YOLO! Bring on the 2700 meters of climbing tomorrow

  • @Dammit
Thanks for that info... not familiar with these cranks but will google it. I'm assuming no cotter pins will be needed.

  • No, not that I am aware of. They're a bit graphically challenging- won't suit all bikes btw.

  • what's the name of the south-east london hill, in the London Classic (not sure this year, last year and year before I think), which is super quiet and residential, at the top there are some rather well-kept front gardens? not Canonbie - it is not that much of a hill.

  • Should I buy some drops, a single right hand SRAM shifter (and matching SRAM brake lever) and a bigger ratio cassette and make the Cannondale Rack a modern version of this? I really liked riding it this morning, but the bar and stem weren't that great for climbing.

First thing first - could you not get a longer stem to be less upright that'll help with climbing?

Secondly you can removed the internal part of the SRAM levers, so just get the Apex model and a 11-32 would be plentiful when paired with a 46t chainring (and a new derailleur I think).

Thirdly, another option is the retroshift levers.

105 5500 Octalink BB in 109mm to be precise. Not the 118mm version for triples.

They are definitely a bit more hassle than GXP et al. Not much, but a bit. Particularly in that you need a different crank puller to square taper (or an adaptor). 7710 is really nice, but like Dammit I would now probably get Omniums unless the bike was full D-A or whatever.

There are some rumblings that they're phasing out Omniums, mind.

    A bit over budget, but my 3.5 year old has had one of these since she was 12 months old and still loves it;
