Is there a mechanical reason you can't get disc brakes with horizontal / semi-horizontal dropouts (not track ends)?
Rotor alignment? Surely that's a problem with track ends too and you get plenty of SS mtbs with those.
People don't like change. Also it's much easier to get a wheel in a vertical dropout when you have a derailleur. More people are making bikes with backward facing dropouts though.
There's also the issue of the brake force pushing the wheel out the back. In the usual position outside the rear triangle the caliper is above the axle. I don't know the exact terminology but if you jam on the back brake the wheel is going to be pulled backwards.
Not an issue if the caliper is placed inside the rear triangle but it does usually make for more manufacturing costs as the dropout/brake boss has to be machined out of a bigger piece of material.Bolt through ftw.

Normally you get IS mounts with a bit of leeway forwards and back, so it should be fine.
Ah, the slotted ones like this you mean?

It says 5/6/7 speed freewheel hub but it looks like a singlespeed wheel?
Can I place a singlespeed hub on this?
The hub will have been dished and spaced on the axle such that there is space for a multi speed block.
The thread will be the same as a single speed freewheel but respacing and re-spoking it to get the dish right isn't worth it.

oh... So it's better to respoke another wheel?

BTW it's for vacation. Rather have it right in the first place then have trouble on the road. I can't get proper screws for a fixed hub so I have to ride with a freewheel or geared. I can't find a cheap geared hub with no derailleur etc.

^^^^Kinda that's got some kind of swapouts to help with what you are on about.

Or get a pair of Nolobi (nee NoLogo) flip flop wheels for £70 off eBay.
What do you mean by screws? (Diagrams or photos are good)

Most of those seem shit from the flats.

My soma juice has horizontal dropouts/trackends on a disc brake Mtb frame.
The positioning is not clever, to release the wheel the whole brake caliper needs to be removed.

Can anyone recommend a nice route from London to Eastbourne?

It's nice to get rep for useful information rather than nob gags.

Also, in related news, why is Sustrans so violently opposed to providing useful information?

Do they beat you around the head with their pamphlets?

It's impossible to find a decent map from them.
Anyway- this is what I have so far:

I have the same problem on my MTB, but I think it's related to the caliper design too. The advantage of having the caliper directly above the axle is that you don't need slotted caliper mounting holes to make the brake work with the wheel at any point in the track ends.

Can anyone recommend a nice route from London to Eastbourne?
Did this on Monday. The way I did it was to go past Biggin hill to westerham and then take the b2026 through Edenbridge and Hartfield.
At pretty much, the end of the road, I'd recommend a short spell on the A272 through Hadlow down, then the A267 and your pretty much there.
It's quite a nice ride, rolling hills. Ashdown Forrest is especially nice -

I'll have a go at mapping that out, the route I put up in my last post takes you down the Forest Way and the Cuckoo Trail- both "linear parks" based on old railway lines.
I though that might be quite nice to tool along- or, that said, it might be HELL ON EARTH with dog walkers, walkers, children etc.

Just how thin is an ultremo ZX?
I've got my skidding down to a minium, a few little hops here and there obvs I'll do a proper one in an emergency but I'm thinking of going for them, got a kenda kriterium on the back now so how much more meat would one of those have than a ZX?

The people who work in the gym at my office have hidden my Sidis because I left them in the changing rooms. Now I can't cycle home or run the errands I needed to tomorrow morning before catching a train away for the weekend - where I'll also need them. Now I have to cancel my plans for the morning, go buy some shoes, then come back to the office and cycle to Liverpool Street.
Where can I buy some shoes tomorrow morning near Clapham?
I do agree with you but, this wasn't my decision...sigh
