  • ftfy. SR MTE-100 is the solution*, if you can find one.

    *Temporary solution, anyway. The long term solution is a frame with a sensible seat tube angle.

  • What is the best value headset that will fit a Surly Steamroller with stock forks? Very preferably from Evans.

    Whatever cartridge bearing headset they have in stock. Nearly all the cheap ones use the same TH Industries cartridges. Correct fitting trumps component quality when it comes to headsets anyway.

    I found one of those on gumtree and linked it to ed a few months back actually haha, but it looks ugly as sin :(

    I will probably have to come to some sort of compromise leaning more towards function rather than fashion for the short term...

    This is why I asked. I don't know what each measurement is, whether crown races are interchangeable or are unique to each headset.

  • Crown races are individual to each headset, although the ones which use the same bearing cartridges obviously tend to be very similar. Fortunately, there is only one size for 1⅛" headsets, so you don't have the JIS/ISO incompatibility issues which afflict 1" headsets.

  • Get in! Ta.

  • is the da wh7700 carbon wheelset any good?

  • Sorry you just reminded me!
    Another solution that could easily solve the problem but am stubborn and don't want to:

    • Get rid of the fucking brooks!

    You could ask Brooks for some custom rails?
    Might be possible if you are nice and polite to them (at the factory not the italy based company).

  • Where could I get a seat post custom built?

    It may not be possible, but I'd like to see whether it's possible to have a seat post built that provides more layback than my current velo orange one (which gives pretty much the most layback commercially available seat posts can)

    I don't mind if it's steel like the nitto s84 if strength is an issue
    (whilst this nitto post has loads of layback at 40mm, the clamp is wider than teh VO one so i wouldn't give significantly more layback in reality)

    I hate to tell you this, but there's only two solution;

    • Get a modern saddle, or the Selle An Antromica which is identical to a B17 and does not need to be broken in (leather is laminated), just a different construction and have a long rail enough to set it further back;

    • A new frame, despite the Longstaff being an excellent frame, it's not fit for purpose (i.e. you).
  • Tbh I could achieve the layback with one of my shitty posts and a VK layback adapter thing,
    but i'd like something that actually looks nice as well.

    But thanks..

    I have this, they work perfectly, but the big steel block rubs against the inner of my thigh as it stick out a tiny bit on the front from the Brooks flap.

  • Re: chain hopping problems

    I've noticed that at certain crank o'clocks the chain is looser and is probably why it jumps randomly on uneven ground.

    Also on inspection it would appear my track nuts are made of industrial butter and any attempt to loosen them has nearly rounded them off.

    Why is chain loose in certain parts and nothing seems bent

    Where can I get man strentgh nuts for the bastard

  • that's the point at which you're meant to tension the chain.

  • Are you having me on?

    Your chain ring is not concentric. Some chain rings are just shitty and oval from the start, others just become that way.

    Or it's not centred on the cranks - Some crank arms are shitty & poorly manufactured, others may wear down.

    Go to BLB and ask for some steel chain ring bolts, then loctite them in.

    [Edit] Just realised you said track nuts, not chain ring bolts.

    They're usually are, what kind of spanner were you using?

  • Socket and large adjustable. 15mm is the only snanner I don't actually have

  • aren't adjustable spanners much worse for rounding bolts as they're never quite the right size and a bit loose?

    you can get a decent 15mm spanner from a hardware shop for about £2

  • If they are rounded, get a mole wrench. And then get a proper 15mm spanner.

    ^ This very much.

    Like Breadly said, a good old fashion spanner will do the trick;

    If they are rounded, get a mole wrench, a new 15mm nut, and then get a proper 15mm spanner.

    ftfy.

  • Do you mean nut?

  • I'll get a fucking blow torch.

  • Even a shiny shiny 15mm ratchet spanner will set you back less than a tenner and I find them really handy.
