  • Im 100% with you on this. Bunch of moaners are mostly hypocrites too.

The ethical codes for this sort of thing are pretty fucking strict in countries like this one. And the kinds of countries they are really cruel or excessive, humans are getting treated shockingly bad too.

The lack of species-centric empathy and ability to reason in a balanced scientific perspective a lot of people have shocks me.

If they are not cute no one cares.

  • Any suggestions for buying disposable contact lenses online? Cheap and reliable obviously...

(Proximity to the Science Museum is not necessarily an advantage)

Try glasses direct, I think they do contact lenses.

  • When in the history of the English language did "go it alone" become acceptable?

Tried and could find anything that fit but didn't want to start a thread

FWIW you need windproof clothing. No amount of movement will keep your joints/muscles warm if any warm air generated is constantly blown away.
I am currently cycling in sevre cold conditions wearing only thin base layers, and windproof outer layers. Windstopper (or similar) stuff works well.

  • Two questions:
    1) Laptop recommendations please (PC not Mac). Light, fast, cheap. I know. 2 of those is possible, 3 is probably not. Looking at £600 max. Acer/Dell/Toshiba?
Or alternatively, I'd like a netbook with a decent sized keyboard and a bigger monitor giving me transportability and home working solutions.

    2) The laptop we've purchased second hand, appears to be up the spout. The shop I purchased it from I'm about to enter into discussions with regarding getting my money back. WHo has experience of small claims courts?

  • We've been paying £180/mo for the last year, which for a house of 5, heated by gas still seems to be way too much.

So that £180 a month plus the £1500 for the year they say you have under paid? £300 a month on electric with no heating? Unless you've got a canabis farm or your own football pitch with floodlights that sounds a massive amount.

Your Landlord should have taken a reading when you moved in for thier records so worth giving them a call too. Deffo cancel the DD until you get this sorted out.

    2) Tynan, and this is not a joke. I remember reading somewhere here in the forum, eveything you have to do, was fairly easy. He did write the post.

HP. Decent mid range laptops and solid build quality.

Plus, you get £150 off when you trade in your old one: http://www.tradeuptohp.com/

  • I'm getting some advice here http://www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk as well. Before I call the bloke up and start twatting it all up.

Second hand electronics are a nightmare.

Believe you have to give them a chance to repair. But write everything down be polite but firm in wanting your money back as you fear further breakdowns, but they can say they want to repair it. Did you buy it on a credit card? That may give you more protection and more come back.

Laptop wise look on moneysavingexpert.com as they have a really useful thread on there about laptops.

  • I have a Dell Inspiron running Windows 7 - it hasn't put a foot wrong yet. I recommend them.

  • I've given them 4 chances of fixing it....

  • AM doing that now. He says he hasn't got the funds...

  • I have had an email from my ISP, UKOnline, saying that they are closing down and removing all my webspace etc.
I'm not sure what happens to my broadband - presumably that will just become Sky now?

However, it does mean I need to find some webhosting, preferably with an IP I can point domain names to. Cheap or free, with no ads. Not too fussed about server side stuff, although I have vague plans to turn one of the sites into a Wiki.

    Who can recommend a supplier.

  • I've given them 4 chances of fixing it....

    That more than enough.

Have you asked for your money back?

Probably best to do it in writing stating that four times makes the product not of merchadisable quality and ask for a full refund. I'd hand this to a manager and get a response.

If its I'd then give local trading standards a call as they can be helpful phoning a shop up and being a little more forceful. I

Taking things to small claims court is a pain, as even if you win you need to get the money off them attend a day in court but it all can be done on line now.

Name and shame the shop as its one to avoid.

  • cyclotron3k it might be worth talking to Consumer Focus, they incorporated Energywatch a year or two ago so you can go to them for this sort of thing. Definitely cancel the DD, it won't affect your credit rating as it's a supplementary way of paying.

  • Markyboy - daysoft for contact lenses - cheap, comfortable, reliable, good customer service.

Dreamhost. Yankies but have a very good reputation and are much recommended.

    Not free but cheap.

  • 20 minutes later. He claims to have no cash available, I gave him the chance to talk to his other partner over the weekend. I've asked for the original price back and the data on the machine transferred for free. Monday is decision time. I've dropped the small claims bomb and said that I don't want to go there as I'd like to sort this out properly as I don't think he's a terrible person etc etc.
He's offered to take the machine and replace it, I've said "no, as I don't want to go through all this again should it break down". The solution he can think of, as he does not have £450 to hand, is to take the machine, fix it and sell it, then pay me back. I said that this was not acceptable.
I am waiting for another 20 minutes of fun on Monday.
