It was more getting tired of bike questions in AQA.

Novice with questions requiring guidence! I want a road bike.

Ha! That lasted a long time.

  • Ha! Yeah... Somehow I just glaze over hippy's posts. I'll find a more suitable thread for it.

  • There couldn't possibly be, could there.. OMG yes!

  • How about a name change: any (except bike) question answered?

  • ^ it's already in misc & meaningless rather than bikes and bits.

I think the reason so many bike questions get asked in here is because they're more likely to get answered (and more quickly) than in the 'correct' thread.

  • We could always merge this entirely superfluous, purposeless, little-used thread with a superior one:

I doubt he'll mind too much. I hear hippy's a fan of glazed things ;-)

  • Techy question coming up, ok, I have to replace my bottom bracket on my bike, (Annoying clicking coming from that region) so I have looked at the specs that came with my bike, and I`m being told I have a 68 x 103, but looking about in the shops I can only find 68 x107, now can I get away with fitting a 107, or will I have to keep hunting for a 103 ???

  • What cranks? Single sprocket or dérailleur, and if dérailleur how many chain rings, which FD, what's your seat tube diameter? All of these could influence whether a slightly longer BB spindle will work.

And while we're at it, as you sure the clicking is actually coming from the BB? Most noises sound like they're coming from the BB, most of them aren't.

Wow, you've given me some stuff to think on, nope its a bog standard no name crank, 3 piece forged 6061 170mm single sproket, seat post is 27.2 mm diameter, when you talk about FD, I am at a loss, what does that stand for ?, I`m a complete novice, mdcc

  • sound[/I] like they're coming from the BB, most of them aren't.

As for locating the problem in the first place, I've looked at everything else, and along with the bottom bracket I was going to change pedals as well, in case this was the cause of the annoying click, I have checked and tightened crank bolts, even greased the bearings on the pedals I have on there at the mo, I can only presume its the bottom bracket, which I have also had out of the bike, only yesterday and thoroughly cleaned and re-greased it, the only thing left to change or consider is the crank set itself, which I was planning on going over with a fine tooth comb, whilst changing the bottom bracket, in case its cracked or something, please tell me if there is anything I may have missed, or should consider

They're more likely to get answered by using google before posting it here but that doesn't stop anyone.

    Breakfast?

  • Mmmm... Doughnuts!

  • when you talk about FD, I am at a loss, what does that stand for ?

Front dérailleur. If you had one, you'd need to adjust it if you changed the BB spindle length, and you might run out of adjustment if you changed it too much.

If you change the BB spindle length on a single sprocket bike, whether it's fixed, singlespeed or hub-gear, you change the chainline. There's a whole thread devoted to getting that sorted.

  • Is there a what thread do I need thread?

  • Yes, it's the utfs thread

  • Many thanks mdcc

  • How do I release the bars from this 3T handlebar clamp?

There's a big bolt thing with a smooth outside and threads inside that I've taken off, and then inside the clamp there is the thing that the big bolt screwed onto. The bars are swinging free but presumably they won't come out until the clamp can be opened. Or something. I only understand the idiot-proof modern bicycles with faceplates. What am I supposed to do with this one? I don't even know what it's called so I can't Google it.

  • You need to remove the brakes and tape and push the bar through.

  • Dear god. Everybody in the 80s was literally Macguyver. Cheers - I haven't got a long enough allen key to remove the brakes so looks like the bars are just going to be swinging, half-naked, until I have the tools to make them decent again.

  • easy now

  • For a short while, there was a sort of old/new hybrid; a quill stem but with a faceplate.

  • Are scientists naturally cool/sexy? Or do they choose certain scientists to present programs to make science look cool/sexy.

  • if you fancy him you might also fancy velocio
