Are any roads around Stratford actually closed? i.e. if I want to go on a ride leaving London via Stratford High Street/Romford Road am I going to be able to or will they stop me for not being Olympian enough?

No you're fine, that's my commute. Romford road is open all the way out to the wonderful land that is Romford.

How do cycle reservations on East Midlands trains work? Their site told me I had to download a Word document(!?) and fill out the details and then email it back to them(!?) so I did and then got an auto message back saying they'd look at my email within 10 days(!?) but certainly no fewer than 20 days(!?)
Then I got another email from some guy saying "thanks for your email, here's your reservation reference", but the original Word document says in the small print that the Word doc IS the reservation document and that it needs an "authorisation code" on it to be valid. I have no idea if the "reservation reference" is the same thing or what. I've emailed the train company back to enquire and got the automated "up to 20 days, lolza" message back.
Has anybody successfully negotiated this system before?

Bizarre. Try booking through East Coast? They seem to let you book bikes on pretty much any network.

I've frequently taken a bike on East Midlands trains over recent months and never had to fill in any document. There's never been any approach from staff checking I have a reservation anyway, so I'm sure you could get away with not bothering if you wish, otherwise use redspottedhanky.com when booking, it's as difficult as ticking a box to secure your bike can be taken on-board any East Midlands train.

Oh cock, I wish i'd remembered you can book any old train through East Coast before doing myself in by booking direct through East Midlands already. Redspottedhanky also gives me a better price than East Midlands did, the fuckers. Redspottedhanky also seems to use the same "mixing deck" thing that East Coast does so it's possibly the same system for both sites - will definitely bear this in mind for next time, thanks both of you. Fingers crossed the staff just let me slip by unnoticed too.
