  • Help! Damsel in Distress

My pedal has worn out the threading on my crank. I have an enthusiastic friend who is willing to try to fit a new one for me but
    a) what bits do i need to measure/ check when buying a new one?
    b) what things does he need to know before embarking on the task?

Anything else I/we need to know that isn't mentioned above.

I'd say your crank is probably knackered now. Threads on a pedal = tough steel - threads on a crank = soft alloy.

New crank time I think, in lieu of a better picture.

  • I'm looking at big tyres to fit a 700c rim. I found that Schwalbe do their 'big apple' in 28x2.15. Will that fit, or is that specially for 29ers (or is a 29er just a mountain bike with 700c wheels?)

    700 = 29er
    29er = fat 700 essentially

Should be the same bead seat diameter. Its the width that will cause you issues. How wide is the rim? Can it handle a fat tyre? Standard 19mm road rim can take a 28 usually. I've squeezed a 42 on with no issues. Dunno what 2.15 equates to but I'm guessing its more than 42.

I know I need a new crank but what should I be buying /looking for?measuring?
What does my friend need to know before fixing?

  • Who was the governor of Campania During the herculonious period?

  • Dunno what 2.15 equates to

    55mm

I see. I didn't read your other post properly.

    He'll need:
    a crank extracting tool,
    pedal spanner and thats it.

Looks like a square taper chainset so get another one of those (you'll know for sure when you remove the old one)

Measure your crank arm length from centre of BB axle to center of pedal hole - it'll probably be 170. You can go longer or shorter tbh with little difference.

Count the teeth. Match it up to your new chainset to get that sweet gearing you love so much. Or get a different gearing and be tougher/wimpier depending.

    Thats pretty much it.

Any chainset will work tbh. Just get as close to that as you can. Try not to stress too much about chainline and the like. A standard single ring chainset will give a roughly similar chianline.

  • I often have ppl tell me they need "a new tyre for a Trek". Useful.

Write down as much info as you can or better yet take the bike and say "I want one of those", and point. I guess thats the benefit of lbs rather than online though.

  • thanks for your help. Will tell him all this.

  • And who's gonna enforce those rules? The private po-po? Tell him to do one.

I did but if he continues I want to make it a formal complaint and get a little whingy letter sent around. I can't be sure which flat he's in so I need to scattergun it a bit before homing in with the shit-in-a-box deliveries.

Put his cat in the bin.

  • His only real option if it is a private road is the managing agent, who won't give a shit but might do something to get him to shut up.

I'd go to them direct asking for clarification on the subject of unloading your vehicle in that spot.

    That sounds like a plan.

  • If there's no waiting at any time on double yellows, how can you load/unload as per wikipedia?

Waiting and loading are different things.

  • Its fine to load and unload unless there is a sign stating at any time. Like this one.

That's a "no waiting" sign, it has no effect on loading restrictions.

The one which also prohibits loading has the second red diagonal, i.e. an X not a

  • What if you're waiting and some pikey bastard starts nicking stuff out of your car - loading/unloading?

How about if you're loading/unloading and your loading person decides to take a fag break mid-load - waiting?

    This discussion is a mindfuck.

  • Don't make me get the official City of Westminster guidance note out...

  • Even the plod don't understand this. In fact, they don't even understand that parking enforcement is none of their fucking business since it was decriminalised at least 20 years ago throughout London and in most of the rest of the country.

  • I couldn't give a fuck about this bloke and he can take as many photos of me as he wants. The missus gets real annoyed though so if I can wind this fat fuck up somehow so he leaves us alone that'd be sweet.

  • Another attempt at fixing my bottom bracket creaking today resulted in an hour of trying to undo my last attempt (tightening it as much as i physically could) and now i just cant get it off and the plastic non drive side cup is cracked inside the BB shell

    fuck

  • (tightening it as much as i physically could)

Well, there's where you went wrong. 40Nm is plenty for BB cups, if they rattle around in the threads after that you have a bigger problem which needs attention.

  • yeah.. well my logic was, the plastic cup must be loose no other explanation.. now i screwed myself

  • literally^

Complain to the lettings agent (in writing) that he's taking photo's of your missus.

Anto stalking legislation can be used to great effect in this situation.

  • Thats the benefit of the plastic cup. Brake a cheap piece which can be chipped/snapped out rather than stripping the threads.
