Thanks.
I have basically lost all sense of perspective. Nothing seems to do anything any more.
If it helps it's a Decore XT.
I am trying to set the outer chainring and it just simply does not seem to want to go any further.

People who put geared stuff together...
Is it difficult to cable everything up if you have no experience? I'm trying to decide if its worth buying inner and outer and some decent cable cutters, which would cost the same as getting my LBS to do it but i'd be able to do it again in future..

Learning a skill like this would never be wasted.

HA!
If you know what you're doing I am sure it's pretty easy.

How much should a beaten (pink >__>) old peugeot road bike cost?

Tmi

^^^ That.
...and previously (doubles/STI's) I've found it fairly simple once you get the hand of it.
Also if you don't move anything you prob won't have to do much adjusting.

Park Tools website is good for instructions, other than that just take it slowly, and make sure you don't cut the cable outer to length with the inner still in place.
Which would be a ridiculous thing to do.

Sounds like experience talking...
I've heard the park tools cutter to be pretty awful, any other recommendations?

The high screw is the closest to the seat tube.
It is screwed in to it's max.
The cage will not clear the outer ring.
The chain is on the smallest rear cog.
Is my bottom bracket spendle too short? Or am I making some sort of other mistake?

I've got the Park one, I think it's pretty good.
If you really want to be precise then use a small cut-off wheel on a Dremel to make a dead straight, clean cut.
However, the Park cutters will do a good job.

Also good for basics is http://www.madegood.org
...and yes, do not cut the cable outer to length with the inner still in place. Always triple check that shit!

Today I noticed a sort of roughness in my drivetrain. I've cleaned, tightened and oiled (as appropriate) the pedals, crank bolts, chainring, cog and chain. No luck. It only seems to happen when I apply proper force through the drivetrain - just letting my legs spin with the cranks it doesn't really happen.
Never noticed it before - it came on quite suddenly.
I've not stripped it down to the BB yet. Reckon it could be grit or looseness in the BB somewhere?

Or could it be that the DR I have just isn't for a triple? - ie can't move far enough?

Not familiar with the Deore front mech, but in my experience you screw the limit screw in to limit movement, therefore if the cage will not move out far enough would it not make sense to back the limit screw out?

Good idea.

It worked but now there's some sort of ramping pin in the way. Hopefully not for long.
Thanks a lot for that - I have basically lost any sense of reason.

Just ask yourself "what would Edward Scoble do?" whenever you run into a fresh problem

The quill is already raised to it's limits and no where does cycle training this time of night.

But have you tried putting bigger tyres on?

Is the rear wheel definitely straight? If you've pulled it slightly off-centre it will have adjusted the angle of the cog against the chain slightly.
Sounds too obvious to be the case though, and I guess if you've been fertling with the chain that's probably not it.
It should be obvious from looking at the mechanism, and also watching what happens when you start adjusting them, but from that pic it looks like H is the one nearer to the seat tube
