  • that's my point pretty much, just wondered if anyone had suffered the consequences of it or not?

I'd be pretty pissed if I was knocked off and the driver was let off on a technicality like that.

  • Generally speaking, people with clipless pedals are so much faster, they never get caught.

  • So everyone with clipless pedals is breaking that law right?

Shimano 105 5700's come with reflectors that fit underneath :D

Ha ha, neat. I'd often wondered about that.

It would be more sensible for the regulations to require reflective patches on the shoes used with clipless pedals though.

The ctc page on lights & reflectors is good. Google hasn't found me any actual examples of missing pedal reflectors being assessed as contributory negligence, but the legal mechanisms seem to be there. Pedal reflectors are surprisingly effective, so it could plausibly happen that their absence would matter and be noticed.

  • yup, i know all about that. what I was asking is are there any cases where lack of reflectors had been used against the cyclist.

Tiswas seems to think it's a possibility that a judge might apportion some degree of blame on the reflectorless rider.

  • well i guess the good thing to learn from this is that no one has heard of this happening so at worst it must be rare. Thanks for all the input.

  • Would it be wrong to put Di2 or just a new mechanical Ultegra groupset on Colnago Lux Dream?

  • objections to electronic groupsets aside, i think it's fine. Nothing wrong with tastefully updating bike frames and a Colnago Lux Dream isn't that old is it, certainly in the STI era. Where would you mount the battery?

  • that attaches to a water bottle holder isn't it?

  • Does anybody know what the cattle rearing standards in Poland are like?

Found a very cheap source of beef but I am concerned about the welfare.

  • that attaches to a water bottle holder isn't it?

well if you can live with that and some chunky mechs, go for it! I think the Di2 shifters look nicer than standard too. For the same money you oculd probably get a period dura ace group with a bit of hunting around, maybe that would be good too.

  • The thing is that I have all dura ace (9 speed) on this bike and it has been crashed, now I need to replace shifters and rear mech. Couldn't find any 9 speed dura ace shifters anywhere. Hence replacing all groupset.

  • i know Di2 would be way more fun but...

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Dura-Ace-7700-STI-brake-gear-shifter-9-Speed-/300721597734?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item4604676d26#ht_500wt_1204

i'm fairly sure 9/10 speed stuff will be compatible anyway. I have 9speed campag shifters and mechs working with a 10 speed shimano chain and casette. it works fine and means i can swap wheels between my 2 bikes regardless of the groupset.

  • yeah I saw them too, but not so sure about their condition. Would rather replace with something new or in mint conditions. Maybe I'm just talking myself into getting a new group set, as it's not me who's paying for it, but the driver who hit me.

  • Went in to Evans today to try on helmets. My bonce measures 61cm around the widest part but the Specialised Medium (54-60 cm) seemed to fit better than the Large (57-63 cm) which felt and looked ridiculous. I am abnormal? Are all brands similar?

Sounds like you should treat yourself to Di2 9000 then.

  • ^^ All brands are different. Giro fit me, nothing else is comfortable.

  • I switched to clipless today. Shimano PD M780 SPDs and Bontranger Soltice shoes (entry-level touring shoes).

I seem to have skipped the horrendous experienced people always talk about with clipless. Five minutes buggering about at the beginning and then no issues at all. After two hours of riding and lots of clipping/unclipping at lights, no falls and I found myself clipping in automatically a lot of the time.

Is this because I've been using Power Grips (on track pedals) for the last few months, or something? Is the whole 'clipless is scary and you will fall over' thing just wildly exaggerated? I'm just not seeing it.

As an aside, playing around with setting stuff up as I ride has led me to a good seat post height, but my knees still feel a little off. Any recommendations on which direction I might want to fiddle with the cleats? Tried moving them back a way but it seemed worse - right now they're quite far forward though.

Most people go straight from flats to clipless.

I went via clips and straps and didn't stack it.

I've had more incidents moving to midfoot speedplay than clipless.

Everyone is different. You don't get an award.

From a religious point of view, you mean? Colnagos are awesome, Shimano is awesome, fuck the haters.

  • Is this because I've been using Power Grips (on track pedals) for the last few months, or something?

Quite possibly, the motion of inserting your feet at an angle into the Power Grips and twisting it to secure it is not too dissimilar to riding with clipless pedals.

I had this same feeling for the first week of riding clipless. Then I had two beers, got to an empty pedestrian crossing with a red light, and in the time it took me to decide I was going to stop after all, I'd forgot to unclip and fallen over.

Deciding you're fine with clipless after all comes before a fall.

  • Deciding you're fine with clipless after all comes before a fall.

    ^This

Nobody falls off after forgetting how to unclip on the first day. Most people take at least a week.

Also, it will only happen if there are friends standing by to watch.

  • or pretty ladies/chaps

  • or someone with a video camera

  • I had a taxi driver do a Neilson-style "ha-ha" last time I went over.
