It is an old frame but the threads go all the way down the BB, looking at the cup next to the threading there doesnt seem to be any reason for it not to go on far enough
The threads inside the frame are deep at least deep enough to thread most of the shell but only 4 or 5 rings of threading of the plastic cup are goings into the frame
some more pics,
In this one it shows the cup, the first red line from the left shows roughly where the threading starts, the other bit is smooth and slots over the actual BB when inserted,
The second red line is the distance it actually threads, (not very far..)
and you can see the threadings quite deep

Any damage to the threads?

I had the same issue as yourself recently, only slightly less severe. I've been riding with about 2 or 3mm of thread hanging out both sides. Hasn't come loose after 2 weeks of daily use
Come to think of it, every time I fit a shimano BB I have problems. I like every other shimano component I've used but their BBs are total shit. I think both the plastic cup and the shape of the splined tool/socket are massive design flaws. Won't be buying one again

I've never had a problem in 15yrs use of Shimano components.

Ok so test number 2 involves using another bottom bracket i have thats an old 3 piece
using that i can get the left side in all the way but if i put the right side in all the way the axle doesn't spin freely
loosening the left side a little allows the axle to spin, could be an issue with no lub'd ball bearings,
but the test was mainly so see whether the left side screwed in which it does, so it must be the plastic cup

If you can't thread the plastic cup all the way in with the other half of the BB out of the way, your threads need chasing.
-
• #29808
chase the BB first. old BB tend to leave a short thread, whether modern one have a longer thread.
if your BB take 68, replace plastic cup with 68, any LBS should have some lying around.
edit - what mdcc said.

The length of threading on the old left side compared to the plastic cup is the same, the old one threads all the way in but the plastic doesn't its the plastic BB that needs replacing most likely?
I.e by the looks of it, it isn't the wrong size, its just not threading properly

just chase the BB first, and then it'll go in.
Have same problem with old frame, be useful to give it a good clean though.

I think you're right Rogan. Because so little thread is entering the BB shell while your other one can thread in all the way it may be that, as you bought the BB 2nd hand, the cup isn't the one that originally came with the BB.
The metal part may have one type of thread gauge that is compatible with your frames BB shell while the plastic ring has another. (British/ISO, Itallian, French, Swiss etc)
A trip to the LBS would answer to this thread question. They are also likely to have a spare cup or two hangin around. Good luck.

Does anyone know of some worldwide statistics for meth amphetamine use? I am particularly seeking to find out if it is more popular in the USA than any other country which it seems to be from how it is portrayed in the media.
No. But auzzies love ice too. Fact.

I might be in need of some cheap but decent road hubs.
- 130mm spacing
- 36h
- 9-speed Shimano compatible
- silver
They will be on Mavic A319s – so a slightly tougher all rounder wheelset.
Is there anything out there better in terms of price point than Decor hubs?
(any money saved would be good!)
Cheers.

Just on my way back from a training ride and as I came up to a roundabout I spotted a bit of a gap in the traffic so stood up and sprinted. Much to my surprise and dismay I shipped my chain and had to bail out to on of the traffic islands where I discovered that I'd managed to strip about four teeth off my rear sprocket.
I've only shipped a chain a few times and not really done any damage so was just wondering if this sort of thing is normal or expectable?

sounds like a lucky escape - fixed or geared? jaygee destroyed a campag cassette once
how worn were the parts?
-
• #29819
Fixed.
Not that worn at all. I put the cog on around February and it's been through winter and a few audaxes but it didn't look worn when I cleaned it recently.

Cheapest place for 29er disc only wheels?
Will accept disc only cross wheels if needed.

• #29822
I did consider that but the thought left me rolling on the floor in stitches, much like the shipped chain nearly did.

decent but cheap barber in central london?

• #29824
what brand sprocket? Is the chain still in one piece?
-
• #29825
The sprocket was the cheapest available from Charlie The Bikemonger so probably a Gusset as that's what he's selling now.
The chain is still intact.
Is it an old frame? It could be that the threads aren't deep enough for a modern BB. Should be around £10 to have a bike shop tap the threads deeper
