  • Yeah it even says "Front" on it...

  • TM is a disciple of Gaston

I hate to ask, but the seatpost isn't the wrong way round is it?

    Yes Ed, that's it.... >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

yep, he has rammed the clamp down into the seat tube and only has the hollow end of the post sticking out of the frame

Ed was only taking his cue from you. :)

  • What PCD?

Get a single speed specific one, most road outers have lowered teeth to make it easy for the chain to come off, which is the opposite of what you want. If you can't find a modern SS specific one, find a NOS one from the days before they started trying to make front shifting easy.

It's currently a C-Record with 135mm PCD. I've done around 2500 miles on the original chainring (God knows the total mileage though), and it drops off maybe every 100 miles. It's shark-toothed to some extent.

Do single-speed specific rings exist in 3/32 size? I will try and look. Otherwise, yes, I'll try and find an older ring.

The bike itself is a typical 90's Italian racer, but I prefer to run it this way with a wide range block on the back for speedy commuting. I don't think this setup is massively popular, but I prefer it. Don't get me wrong though, I also own single gear and "normal" racer setups.

  • Chain drop doesn't happen often with a single front but it's always at the worst time if it does happen. Good luck.

Cheers, 790. That generally ties up with what I've found. I may try a chain catcher at some point. Will see.

Also, I've made sure that the chain length and derailleur cage tension are Set up as best possible as this made a difference when I first set it up.

  • Do single-speed specific rings exist in 3/32 size?

Yes, but mostly in every size except 135pcd

Gephardt Classic rings have no dropped teeth, although the anti-drop pin on the outside is in the wrong place for C-Record road cranks.

  • There's a picture frame factory in Hackney Rd. Maybe they will have some for sale.

cheers BQ, look like quite a few round there (5 on first googling!), will check it out.

  • As much as I couldn't give a fuck about the torch relay thing or, increasingly, the olympics, I have to ask... Why has Will I Am of the Black Eyed Peas and the latest TV Karaoke travesty been given a go? It was on the news last night and he was running along. I had assumed it was for British sportspeople or other people who were in some way inspirational? WTF.

  • I watched an interview with him, don't like his music but the guy is definitely inspirational. He has brought his whole extended family out of the ghetto, and is now working in producing upmarket cars in facilities in the middle of the shit area he came from, hoping to bring more wealth to the area...

I can't stand the black eyed peas, but n spite of myself I like will I am....

    CSB ^

  • But what does that have to do with the London 2012 olympics? Is it an exercise in down-with-the-kidsiness?

  • Heh, I didn't debate that point.. (:

But yeah I agree, down-wit-da-kidz-ness, general PR...

  • Can anyone make sense of this shambolic pile of shit the ICO has inflicted upon us?

What the fuck is implied consent? Why are they talking about doctors? What the fuck are we actually supposed to do to avoid breaking the bullshit law?

    racist

  • @tiswas: I've been sending the same image around the office for the last few weeks. ICO revised their shit on the weekend and my brain is too fucked to make any sense of their semi-legal mumbo jumbo.

  • But what does that have to do with the London 2012 olympics? Is it an exercise in down-with-the-kidsiness?

Half and half, IMO. There are some seriously inspirational sports personalities out there, the Olympics is about sports, but the more inspirational and commendable people you get involved, the more people you can potentially inspire.

  • I feel so inspired I'm gonna break it down now in some celebratory rap, yo.

  • WTF?

  • ^ a few of the Sky riders at the Tour of Britain when warming up for the final time trial had these up their noses. I presumed it was some sort of Vicks Vapourub type stuff. I guess it opens up the airways of something. It certainly looked odd.

  • I bought an SRM last year, on eBay.

It's performed flawlessly until last Friday, when it would not wake up.

The unit itself is 4-5 years old, and was OEM on a Cannondale System Six (one of the few bikes to ever have an SRM option).

When I got it the zero offset (the reading that the strain gauges produce when there is no torque being applied through the cranks) was in the mid 300's.

I noticed a little while ago that the zero offset was dropping, it held relatively stable around the 85 mark, then fairly rapidly (based on a turbo session roughly every 3 days) fell 10 units (75,65,44) until I went to turn it on and it was dead.

Up until the point at which it failed to wake up it had given very consistant readings.

Now I am aware that correlation is not causation, and that I am making an assumption that it is the battery that has gone flat here- but that it might be something else that has failed.

The representative from Scientific coaching is adamant that the zero offset fall is not related to the battery losing it's charge, she says that it is something to do with the cranks- but won't be drawn into saying what that something is.

I've sent it to them anyway, as they are the accredited SRM service agent in the UK, but I'm worried that they will change the battery and call me with a different issue.

What could be causing the zero offset to fall if it is not related to the failing battery?

Am I stupid for sending it back without insisting on a reason as to why the zero offset was falling that was not related to the battery?

  • What could be causing the zero offset to fall if it is not related to the failing battery?

Have a read of the above and think about the possible failure mechanisms for the strain guages and any resistors in the bridge circuit.

  • Woudl they fail in such a way that they displayed consistant readings up until total failure though?

=I read the linked information, but I don't know enough about this sort of thing.

  • I think most electronic components have a variety of failure modes ranging from instant death to slow drift away from specification. Your rapid (relative to total life) decline isn't a surprising result.

  • I could do without having to replace it. Fucksticks.

  • It is possible to ride a bike without some kind of power meter. I've heard.
