  • PLeease? Who works at putney cycle here, I know there is someone but don't remember who?

  • Cross posted from the training thread - any ideas?

So I'm riding a lot more recently. But have suffered from pain in my knees before (have had physio) and I think I'm on the road to recovery as long days in the saddle aren't hurting my knees at all, or if they do only a little.

But for the life of me I can't spin a high gear without my knees starting to hurt. Is this normal? I can happily spin in the front middle chain ring for ages at around 80-90rpm but if I change to the big ring I find I have to gear down so much I may as well be on the middle ring again.

Will this come with fitness again and is it just my knee getting used to this again?

  • Ascending numerical ftw!

Do you mean high gear as in hard? If so, perhaps you're not as recovered as you think you are. Take it easy.

Or do you mean spin? Perhaps your pedaling style gets flaky at high rpm. Practise and if pain persists I'd always err on the side of caution and rest ice compress elevate etc..

  • I mean hard gear.

  • I would say you shouldn't be pushing a hard gear if you're recovering from knee problems.

  • I just feel that when I'm spinning at 90-100 RPM and only going slow I should shift to a harder gear, when I do that brings on the pain.

  • Welcome to the hotel 90-100. Stay here a while.

  • Yeah, I saw them- have you used either of them?

Bdop is a regular contributor on BikeForums, and seems like a good guy, from what I've read...

  • I'm spending this week in the slow lane at hotel 90-100 (conflating misremembered eagles tunes). it's boring. in a friendly sort of way. still get where I'm going eventually though.

  • I just don't feel like I'm going fast enough!

But no knee pain is obviously good.

  • Try 120-130

  • Or he could stay at 90-100 which has no knee pain until his feeble body is ready for more.

  • Seriously though, you don't want to fuck your knees up just to go a bit quicker.

  • You'll never be as fast as tiswas anyway.

  • He's a Real Man™.

  • Your right - I think It's just a case of ride at this rpm till I feel better/ strong enough to push a heavier gear.

Thanks - just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything stupid.

  • Yeah, I saw them- have you used either of them?

Someone else on the forum has used bdopcycling.com, they recommended it to me in the orient express thread.

  • Cheers.

  • More revs -> less torque -> less pain?

  • Yeah, I saw them- have you used either of them?

No, but for the price it has to be worth an email to bikedomeworks, if they take PayPal you can't really go wrong can you?

  • Planning a big ride tomorrow - is there anywhere on line you can view a weather map, much like google maps whereby you can scroll and view the weather?

Since I'm going to be riding through a few places that would be much more handy than typing in each individual place.

£37.92 for the pair of hubs, including postage with tracking number from Taiwan, paid using Paypal.

These will go onto my 88/60mm pair of rims, just need spokes.

  • Did anyone else in SE London have intermittent power cuts overnight or have any idea what might have been the cause?

  • Clapham junction had a power cut for about 6 hours
