    I remember a recumbent that was a completely pointless exercise in engineering.
    Tadpole design (two wheels in front) three wheeler using rear steer and rear drive.

    my brake calipers are not springing fully open after i release the levers - common sense suggest that cable is obstructed - cables are perhaps a year old but bike has got grotty over winter - would recommended cure be to remove cables from housing and drip through some lube?

    ^^ GT85 down the outers if you don't buy new ones, they're only cheap.
    Take the calipers off and get right in there with a toothbrush and a liberal lube. If you have the tools, strip them down and scrub.

    Grit will seize anything up- the front mech on my girlfriends bike would (once moved by hand with sufficient force) simply stay where it was moved to.

    It was so stiff that it broke the left hand shifter.

    Liberal squirts of GT85 and manipulating the mech back and forth, and presto- worked again.

    Someone told me that the main reason the immigrants were invited were to counter and break the unions. I get the feeling this person is being a little racist and making things up.

    Immigrants were invited to fill a shortage of labour; since unions are stronger when there is a shortage of labour, and weakened by a shortage of work, it's a reasonable conclusion that immigration would weaken the unions, although it's unlikely that the Labour government of 1945-51 would have had this as a policy aim. The racism in the story is really that drawing labour from the Caribbean colonies was a last resort after insufficient European immigrants heeded the call.
