I want to make my BMC lighter, how do I go about this? It currently has a Record/Chorus groupset, Easton ea70 wheels, ea90 stem, FSA Omega bars and a spec romin saddle. I know the wheels would be where I could save weight easily, but they're also really expensive. I cant' change the seatpost so I guess it's down to the groupset and stem/bars/skewers/saddle(not exactly heavy anyway).
Lighter frame?

Bin that Campag shit for starters. Drill a few holes in that cheap carbon frame, have a shit. Job done.
-
• #16530
But don't shit in your frame. That will make it heavier.
-
• #16531
Shit on it. The saying "Goes like shit off a BMC" must have come from somewhere...
-
• #16532
sumo, I ride a steel heavy frame, go have a good shit before you ride.

I was thinking of putting Sram Red on it anyway so just might do that. The S500 levers on my track/road bike have won me over. I do love the campag shifting though.
And it's alu with carbon stays, I didn't want a full carbon frame because I'll smash it within a week. I guess wheels are the only way really then. Going to have to save some money up. -

Keep the bike as it is, use it and abuse it.
If you have money for a Red Groupset then contemplate building a new bike, with they types of components that you would not want to be wearing out with daily commuting.
I would not commute on a Dura Ace equipped bike.

Good advice. It's staying the way it is for now. I'm going to swap the tyres out for some Ultremo's and start saving for the Sram Red groupset. I can't afford/have the space for more than 2 bikes, so it's track bike for general use, fancy road bike for longer rides/commuting when I feel like it.

i think bikes generally make most sense when there is an even spend on the components, otherwise you end up with the Chris King headset on a Create bike syndrome

Lighter frame?

If you want a weightweenie build, don't start with a frame >1.5kg

didn't say I wanted a weight weenie bike, just to shave some weight off it. I'm not going to swap parts just because they're lighter. But if I can upgrade bits and save weight without spending a fortune then I will.

• #16539
can i buy a chris king inset bottom cup?
I want to upgrade fork on my mtb as the current one is only 80mm travel and the frame is specced for 100-120mm
now would also seem a good point to convert my front hub from 9mm QR to 15mm axle
current headset is 1 1/8" top and bottom but the fork i want to buy has a tapered steerer tube so i need a different bottom cup for the headset

just to shave some weight off it
You can shave weight pretty much anywhere on your current build, but not many of the things you can do will be good value in weightweenie terms. SRAM Red isn't actually worth the extra over Force unless you've already tackled all the big weight loss items, i.e. frame and wheels. If you want to make it lighter/faster for sunny Sundays without compromising its daily driver qualities, get some 'best' wheels, as you can quickly swap them in for nice days, and you can use nice tyres on your best wheels without worrying about £30 tyres that only last 1000 miles on your commute.

Sorry, yes cartridge. I can't read the code. It looks like 6000 S2 but it's not.
the end bit is RS2, what hubs are they?

I thought I was ok on Specialized in the past but now you mention it, I did puncture a fair bit at times.
Oh well, I've out of Bontrager and Specialized and now use a less known brand that I buy from Harry Perry which so far seem very good. Heavy duty but good.
As I said above, I think I was just unlucky with the Bonties...they do seem to have been left to perish.
Is that in woolwich?

I'm sure there are other places, but BLB on Bethnal Green/Brick lane, should be able to sort you out.
BLB only had pink and black. £15 for bike bits that were marked up a 5 euro. The M8 bolts weren't for the cycle and ended up getting given the wrong ones in the hardware shop.
E1 cycles near Aldgate sorted me out today for £5 nice people too.

This is all good advice, I looked at Red and Force, and decided that Red was not worth ~£500 more than Force.
That £500 can get some pretty nice wheels, or bars/stem/seatpost.
The frame may be relatively heavy, but you can certainly lose a lot of weight from all the other components, and you can of course swap the frame at some point.
Honestly though- nothing makes a difference that is more noticeable than light wheels (in my experience, anyway).
Less inertia when accelerating really gives you a kick out of corners, up hills and so on.
But it is a good idea to have some training wheels for the day to day, and if you only have the space for one set then something like the EA90 SLX are a good compromise- light, no weight limit, clinchers.
When they come up on eBay they go for around £300.

How much lighter can it be than Campag Record anyway? Isn't that carbon anyway?
Bear in mind that 1kg is only a bag of sugar, buy a lighter belt and thinner shoes. Keep a lock at work rather than carry one. Don't carry a bag or any tools. Don't fill the water bottle. Fill the tyres with helium (that won't actually work as they will go flat quite quickly. -

Unless you're a bit overweight, or have more money than sense, rather than 'tuning' your bike with titanium bolts and WW components, just train your neuromuscular systems for 6 to 8 weeks. The bike will accelerate out of corners/up hills much more quickly blah blah blah blah blah.

Those components are'nt really heavy, and the the frame is heavy as it is designed mostly with stiffness in mind. So adding anything too WW and flexi, will be silly.
Obvious answer - lighter wheels, inners, and tyres.
Unless you have the same fork as me with the alu steerer. Thats a bit overweight in modern terms
-
• #16548
WW answer.
Ditch those heavy wire cables for powercordz, get a lighter saddle, replace the cassette with a lighter one, get some WW bottle cages, swap the bigger bolts for alu, get a lighter saddle, and buy some carbon bars (+ the wheel thing).

I have an HTC Desire. For the past couple of weeks or so it started to display a dialogue box which says...
"The application Google Services Framework (process com.google.process.gapps) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
I've noticed that my gmail alerts and auto download of mail aren't happening up any more.
What does this mean? Why has it happened? How do I stop it?? please.

Full carbon fork. Currently has an alu steerer.
Get rid of the gatorskins?
