Petrol also does the trick. Stick it in a squirty spray bottle and give the glue a light coating. Let it soak for 5min and repeat. Then attack it with a rag. Letting it soak in while you concentrate on another area makes it a bit easier

What hostels or cheap hotels would people recommend to stay in when visiting Amsterdam? the Flying pig looks nice.

I wouldn't recommend petrol if you're hasty like me. I'd just get annoyed and burn the place down.
Aceton, on the other hand, evaporates rapidly. -

Who does a good job of removing old and fitting new tubulars in London?
I asked in Brixton cycles last week. Apparently there's only 1 guy who does in there and it's £32 per wheel, not including cleaning them and it takes a week!
I opted for tape in the end, seems ok so far.

I had mine done by Jos for £25 per wheel, but Tour de Ville ain't there anymore.

really? costs less to build a wheel. isn't just a case of scraping glue off?

I'm driving down to Eastbourne tomorrow, early. If you can bear to get to Waterloo first thing then I can give you a lift to anywhere roughly between London and there- the bike will fit in the car without having to take it apart.
I cannot offer a lift back though I'm afraid. Thanks for the offer. I'm taking the car so I can keep all my refills in it - I'll park it somewhere near the night circuit. I can always bail if I'm feeling too tired to ride.
I missed the rental place tonight anyway so will have to try again tomorrow. The logistics for simple things are always so complicated. -

Acetone works fine but takes time. I used a drill with a wire wool type attachment when I had to do this, it took the worst of it off then the acetone and plenty of elbow grease did the rest.
How old is the glue? If it's only a few years old I'd leave it on.

Only a year or two. I Might just put a layer on top.
Is tape onto glue a no no?

I use tape on glue for cyclocross tubs, as a safety measure to prevent tubs rolling off. It works well but removing a tub when you've done this take a metric fuck tonne of effort!
-
• #13465
Good to know. Any chance you could break down the procedure for me?
(new glue onto old)
-
• #13466
I'd put on a layer of glue onto both the rim and the base tape of the tubular, leave it for 24 hours, repeat, then a final layer onto the rim and fit the tub.
Are you using the tubs on the road or the track? (I'd add a layer or two more if the latter).
There's a very good thread on weightweenies which has all you ever need to know and more on glueing tubulars.

What animals other than chickens are associated with cowardice?
I have vague thoughts of "yellow bellied" but then my memory fails me

Something about inbreds and eels in the fens and stabbing mexicans.
Its racist, and nothing to do with animals.

Where can I find replacement parts for a Shimano FH-6402? Not sure what's wrong with the old one, it's just the hub. Axle might have cracked. Would that indicate the innards are probably not worth saving? Should I just buy another one?
-
• #13474
If it's in a wheel, the easiest and usually cheapest option is to buy a new hub and swap the guts; axle, cones, bearings and freehub body. If it's not in a wheel, it's hard to get the freehub body off. Take it apart and see what's wrong. I've got an axle and freehub body laying around that I pulled out of a brand new Ultegra hub for a Fixxer conversion, so you can raid my parts bin for a small fee.

Oh, awesome, I'll tell Guapo to get lookin'. It's not in a wheel, so he'll have to see if it even comes off.
Acetone, a rag, elbow grease and regular breaks.
