I've got a set just like this from AliExpress. They don't get proper hot just kinda warm. I can't say I fully trust AliExpress electrics so I don't use it when I'm out the house but so far they've worked. Might be worth getting a small dehumidifier too. Last year I got a heated blanket off Amazon, the plug developed a problem so I replaced it and realised it doesn't have a ground cable. Be very cautious of anything with slightly dubious origins.

I have one. It’s good apart from you do get the smell of warm damp shoe liberated!
I wouldn’t use it for leather shoes or boots
The good ones just heat the air a few degrees above ambient temp, and it’s the gentle warm airflow that does the work.
This winter I am interested to discover if the newly created drying room with a dehumidifier does a better job than the shoe drier. At some point I’ll put one wet shoe in the drying room and use the shoe dryer on the other one.

Whistling roof rack question. I've just installed some roof bars, supposedly aerodynamic profile. They have a rubber strip covering the central slot. I removed the strip to fit a Thule 598 bike carrier. With the bike carrier installed there is quite a noticeable whistle when driving over 50ish mph.
Did I do something wrong or is this just normal? Obviously the car's aerodynamics are affected by the bars and rack (and the bike on top) but it's a bit annoying.
I'm wondering if I should have cut down the rubber strip to cover the parts of the slot on either side of the Thule mounting points?

"newly created drying room with a dehumidifier does a better job than a shoe drier"
I'm no expert but I'm going to guess yes.

Thanks for feedback. When you say "wouldn't use for leather shoes or boots" do you mean "leather shoes and leather boots"? Just trying to work out if any functionality that wouldn't work for my fabric walking boots? I can deal with warm damp shoe smell - I'm sure the smell of warm damp dog will overpower that....

Cheers - How long would you say they take to dry a pair of shoes?
-
• #123560
Yep, wouldn’t use it for leather items as it could dry the leather out and crack it.
-
• #123561
Cool, that's what I assumed.
How long do you reckon they take to dry out a shoe?
-
• #123562
Depends on wetness etc but it does a decent job in a few hours.

Great intel, thank you.

Fwiw I've found microfiber clothes quite good at helping draw moisture out.

My question:
Why does;
newly created drying room with a dehumidifier
not have it's own Current Projects thread?

Especially one who, at a guess, would also have won 'Best-smelling Dog' in the recent show? :)

That's one prize he definitely isn't winning!

• #123568
Ah, I guess I guessed wrongly, then. :)

Yes you should have cut down the strip a temporary alternative is to tape over it. I had to do this on a long trip when the whistle drove everyone mad.

Because it has been completed!
And it is currently full of bib shorts drying, and no one needs photos of my arse pads.
But I can report it is a resounding success. The foxy rack can take a folded sheet or duvet cover. It has ample space for a couple of loads of laundry but I tend to prefer to do one load at a time so the clothes get hung over two rails and dry faster. It has made the laundry process quicker and easier.
There is adequate for the ironing board, clothes steamer and floor steamer in the clothes drying room. The laundry baskets fit under the drying racks. All that clutter and our clothes airing rack used to reside on our landing so there has been a great decluttering. The boxlegend clothes folder is also in the drying room so it is a quick job to fold all the T-shirts neatly once dry.
It’s one of those little home improvements that has improved our living space, the laundry routine, my t shirts can dry flat, delicate woollen items can be rack dried flat and the whole job was much cheaper than a compressor tumble drier and is cheaper to run too.

If it's the KDP uploading process you're testing, from memory I think the book's internals can be done with a .docx file, so maybe just fill the body with placeholder text. You could then upload with a mock-up cover image, check it and then remove from publication. From memory it's a pretty quick process to remove it. I highly doubt there's a real person checking contents, so a book filled with nonsense is unlikely to be flagged in the way existing literature might be.

Aren’t you supposed to slide the T-nut over the rubber strip, so it kind of deforms around it and pops back up either side? Sure I saw a YouTube video showing this. BMW racks are made by Thule and have good install videos

Thought that might be it, thanks, will cover the slots. I wanted to leave the rubber strips intact to reinstall when I remove the bike rack, but I'll come up with something. Will probably just have to put up with it for the drive back home from Wales!
And yes "audible feedback as to speed" is definitely a feature I now have, arguably more effective than average speed check cameras.

Oh, I see. BMW YouTube video confirms. That's really helpful, thanks.

I want to set up an Amazon ebook seller account. I don't care about actually making any money but want access to test how the system works.
If I download some public domain books from Project Gutenberg tweak the formatting a bit and upload them to Amazon will I be running into any copyright issues?
