The local tip will take a wider range of batteries though. Always worth a trip to the tip to see what else they take. I'm about to take a load of folding chairs to the tip because they have a furniture recycling area where the best bits are fixed up (training local youth) and then sold via charity shops.

In theory my council will collect 'household batteries' left in a clear bag on the top of my wheelie bin but I've got no confidence they wont end up over the street

If you're in waltham forest definitely don't bother. 3 times I've tried and I just found the bag on the ground in my front garden each time.

DIY places also usually take old batteries, small electricals and lightbulbs including florescent tubes. Our B&Q does, at least.

Airport departure lounges, worth it?

Have a 6am flight from Stansted in the summer, and am torn between:

1. Driving after work, staying in a hotel, heading to the terminal an appropriate time before the flight (no lounge)
   
2. leaving in the early hours of the morning, getting there early, hitting the lounge at 4am (opening time) and rinsing it for 90minutes before boarding
   
3. as 2 but just going to Pret for breakfast (no lounge)
   
   

Only had lounge access once due to BA bollocking up seats and it was part of the compo, but it was later in the day and I caned the free London Pride.
No idea what the Stansted lounge is like or even if they have much on at 4am.

Doesn't look particularly inspiring

I've once travelled on a business class ticket which gave me lounge access. I wouldn't choose to pay for it.

what are you going to do at 4 am in an airport lounge? crisps, biscuits and pastries are not worth 90 minutes of your sleep.

For me I'd go for option 1 for peace of mind and grab breakfast at wherever is open at Stansted. But I guess it might come down to cost and who is paying. From experience you'll get some free food and drink in the lounge but it's not worth paying for - especially when the airport will be virtually empty so no problem finding a quiet area to have brekky.

You can put a bit of cardboard behind the pads but, once you've walked into it a couple of times, flown into a rage when you can't get it to open easily, your kid has a tantrum and really forces it and kicks it, it eventually comes loose and falls over; the paint gets damaged. You kind of ideally want to put a small screw in the wall like it says in the instructions, because they do eventually come loose.

Cheers. The hope is that it shouldn't receive much abuse as it's only going to be for night-time use to stop kid falling down the stairs after she gets out of her cot-bed (it may even be entirely unnecessary but doesn't seem like something we should really test).

The lounge at Stansted is a bit shit IME and not worth it. Pret will be rammed full. I'd go for no. 1. The Radisson Blu next to the airport has a really cool wine cooler/storage column where a lady on a trapeze goes and fetches your bottle of wine for you and the last time I stayed there breakfast started very, very early.
