  • Calling yourself Master Xyz is the old fashioned way of saying you're a male under 18, you become Mister Xyz when you hit 18.

Or you're a Chancery or Queen's Bench Master in the High Court.

  • tester:

While master's degrees are a thing, I don't think anybody has ever used the honorific Master in English to indicate that somebody has one, except in the rare cases of persons with the surname Bates. In some trades, it is used to address or designate an instructor of apprentices.

    Jonny69:

I don't think we have anything for that as a prefix. People who want to indicate that they have a Masters degree tend to put MEng, MSc or MA after their name. Calling yourself Master Xyz is the old fashioned way of saying you're a male under 18, you become Mister Xyz when you hit 18. I think that's correct.

You may both have misunderstood, and I probably didn't put that clearly enough. It's not a form of address in German, only an academic degree, and 'master' is its equivalent as an academic degree title.

  • Are you currently in possession of his detonators?

  • German-speaking people seem to like to be correct

    Sprichst du Deutsch? ;)

  • Should I do likewise and call him Mr Gruber and not Hans?

At least signing off is less complicated....

    Yippee ki yay,

  • Is there a way in window xp to lock the app so that you can only use that one and not get out?

Context might help; my toddler likes using ms Paint my old netbook. Mainly telling us what to draw and connected stories, but sometimes doodling with the external mouse. Obviously it's super easy to leave the paint section - minimise/close /open some thing else/etc.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

(tablets aren't an option, it has to be a laptop as they want to copy us)

  • If you can find a suitable browser based drawing package then you could try running the browser in kiosk mode

  • Does anyone know where to get hold of a 29er rim with 30mm ID (or higher) and 36h; I can only find 32h, or narrower rims.

  • Obviously it's super easy to leave the paint section - minimise/close /open some thing else/etc.

Resize the window to exceed the visible area, using the keyboard? I used to do this trick on Win3.1 I think. Step by step:

    • First manually maximise the upper part of the window, by resizing it to fit the top part of the screen
    • Use ALT+Spacebar to open "shortcut menu" (internet search tells me this is the shortcut) It might also be possible to access it with a right-click in the taskbar, not sure
    • Select the "Move" option (I always did this with arrow keys and Enter)
    • Using keyboard arrow keys move the top of it offscreen slightly (up up up) so the app title bar is not visible any more, and window decoration buttons are inaccessible. So no more minimise/maximise/close buttons nor the app icon/shortcut menu (the one on the top left)
    • Hit the Enter key to finish moving
    • Using the mouse, resize the bottom part of the window to cover the remaining display area
    • Auto-hide taskbar? (Maybe relocate it to the right side of the screen or the top, so it's less in the way)
  • For XP have a look at Windows steadystate

  • Will a council recycling centre take wooden pallets?

  • LB Hillingdon has a separate zone for 'wood/timber'.

Only stuff I've ever seen refused was a load of laminate flooring,
that the operative clearly defined as 'Trade' rather than 'domestic',
and sent the optimistic geezer to the Trade zone where he would incur at least the minimum charge.

  • Risked it, no drama.
Not sure why, but I thought they might refuse pallets, the only sign was "no sleepers" so happy days.

  • Amazing!

This is also a great idea:

    Auto-hide taskbar?

  • Cheers. Will do

  • Car audio/sat nav question

I want to replace the original stereo in my 2004 car. Don't need cd, just radio and bluetooth.

Current setup has a cd-slot phone holder and a charger with a bluetooth to FM adapter.

Feels like I should be able to get all of that in one unit now instead of chargers, mounts and cables looking like a Halfords car boot sale.

What's the standard non-audiophile car audio setup these days?

    • everything (sat nav, audio UI) on the phone, phone in a third-party holder, bluetooth connection for music

    • head unit with satnav, bluetooth for music, audio UI on the head unit

    • something else?

  • A headunit with Apple car play/Android auto would eliminate everything apart from a charging cable (needed to connect your phone to the headunit).

  • You can get head units that will run Android Auto /Apple Car Play wirelessly which seems handy to me. Probably worth more than a 2004 car though.

  • Probably worth more than a 2004 car though.

Haha that's true. But as long as it's running and passing its MOT there's no need to replace it.

That's the other question actually - what do people do about car audio security these days? I live in a very crimey area. Haven't had to think about it because the current stereo isn't worth anyone's while to nick. Back in the day we used to have removeable faceplates, is that still a thing?

  • What are the differences between the BB71 and BB91 bottom brackets?

  • 90% sure it is just spec level, Ultegra/XT v Dura Ace/XTR
