It's glued to the front bezel, which is made of thin aluminium and is also glued on and can't be removed without bending it such that it'll never be the same again.

You can buy a new bezel for £20.

Brake question:

looking to get some tektro-926al-mini-v-brake for my 26" Raleigh Outland - running 1.95 tyres, worried about clearance. Wondering if anyone would know if I'd be able to run that setup?

I had no idea on the difference truth be told, twice the price but https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-alivio-t4000-v-brake seem to be more the ticket. Sadly no longer in London, but anyone that would be able to pop suitable brakes in the post so I can ride at the weekend would be preferable to putting money into wiggle!

You prob will have clearance issues tbh. Difference is £5.60 per brake which is prob worth the peace of mind.

Shimano XT 11-speed cassette, XT 11S shifter — will an XT 9S rear mech index correctly?

Shimano compatibility chart does not rule it in or out. Does anyone know for sure?

Yeah I think it's no. I used to think that the rear mech was immaterial because the shifter defines the pull, and the RD just does what it's told (right?).

Apparently, rear shift ratio is a thing - that being the amount a RD moves horizontally for each mm of cable pulled. 9sp XT is 1.7, 11sp is a gnat's off 1.1.

In my case (9sp XT RD and a 10sp cassette), I used a friction thumbie.

Yes RD is capable of 40T big cog I think. But hell, why not just fit the manufacturer setup. Anyone here in need of a nearly-new 3x9 group? Perfect for the retro MTB crew — 22x28 low gear, what's not to like!

Edit: M772 SGS is specified only for 34T big sprocket, with up to 22T diff between rings. So you are right @vilms5000. Works well in my setup though!

Integrated headsets - am switching out the fork on my giant TCX (1 1/8 to 1 1/4 taper, because I fucking love obsolete standards)

Removed the old fork, thinking that I would remove the crown race from that, slap it on the new fork and off we go (i.e. what I've done every time I've ever changed a fork in my life). But, lol, no crown race on the old fork. So now I don't know what the fuck I'm doing. Have tapered forks just done away with crown races?

Presumably your new fork has a flat crown race seat and you don't have a crown race because the old fork didn't use one?

[shrugging emoji] there’s like a flat 3- 5mm around the very base of the steerer but could very well just be there to interface with the head tube. Attempted to photo but it’s tricky to get the detail as it’s all black.

The fork is a full carbon thing so I’m assuming there needs to be something between the carbon and the headset bearing, but that might just be because carbon components are also a new thing in my life.
