I'm needing some help deciding, do I ride the fixed on this, or the mtb (with 22:13 gearing on 26" tyres)
I'm tending towards the fixed, but I want some comfirmation, how much ice is there on the route? Anyone know?
-
• #203
i hope everyone can stay upright.
not sure if it's the weather or the winter warming nectar that will prevent staying upright!

isn't that 44 gear inches? just wondering if there are mountains where you hail from?

Hehehe! Me too man.
On the recent London lights ride I had just got a new bike and didn't have the tools at the time to swap pedals over to my usual spds, so I had to use the clips that were on it. I was wearing adidas shell toes which have the smoothest soles known to man and I couldn't get the pedal to flip round after each of the many stops to get my foot in.
I fell off once at a give way when I did the spd twist and nothing happened and spent the rest of the ride dragging my right clip around as I could get my foot in it.
Drove me nuts!
I am sure you will be fine though..,
I find with clips & straps it's all about the set-up. I run £20 double straps with a patch of leather at the top to keep them together with christophe double skinned cages on MKS track pedals. It's rare that i don't get my foot in 1st time as this keeps it's shape really well. Retention is great and you can still get your foot out easily if you want. Single straps are generally rubbish for getting your foot in and out of as the strap bends all over the place. Having clips and straps also encourages you to trackstand ;-)

I fell off on the ice the other day right square on my elbow and now it's about twice the size of the other one. Was really worried I'd broken something at the time but it's just bruised. I am thinking i may not come along as i don't want a repeat performance especially on said elbow. Lots of the route out west is back streets and me thinks that will be a total ice rink with the weather set to stay in the minuses every night for many nights.
I don't want to sound like a total killjoy/mum/mail reader/piker but we should at least consider postponing this until things thaw out or there could be lots of injuries.
Has anyone reccied the route out west for ice? -

if the weather holds, i'm out.
i am a pansy. but the idea of sliding like fuck, changing punctures in the cold, and generally being cold do not stack up well against staying in and having awankcup of tea. -

Exactly, it will be more fun if the temperature is above freezing. I spend the whole fucking day in the cold at work and it sucks. 30mins at the moment on the bike and my fingers hurt even in my thickest gloves, not to mention numb toes etc. It'll be about 2 hoursish out in the cold, longer if we have to walk along roads that are too icey - remember that.

Are wanks not desirable?
-
• #213
depends.
-
• #214
The ride goes ahead regardless, I have done the Bridges in all weathers and wouldn't mind seeing what that side of London looks like under snow.
I believe most of the roads, except for the short section I mentioned previously will be passable(awaiting confirmation) and failing that they can be routed around.
I hope to have the thread title amended later to something more apt.
If you can't handle the cold or your bike, don't come, there will be a 9th iteration in 3 months or so.

If it is still looking sketchy on Saturday night we will do this:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3399940
And avoid the less well travelled roads and paths of that section missing two bridges but preserving the flow of the route. -
