  • eh? yes i am a student. yes i had a job. yes i saved some money from it and wanted to invest it in something that i knew wouldn't be paying for stuff that i find unethical. what is your problem?

tax fiddle? you can get away with saving over the limit for cash isa's and they don't do anything except send you a letter a year later saying "you have saved more than allowed, but we are going to allow it..." yes. pa on a tax fiddle. nowt to do with me.

Don't get your knickers in a twist.

Plenty of people take out isa's in their childrens names as a tax fiddle.

  • National Savings Bonds?

    National Savings Account?

Premium Bonds? Chance of winning a million pounds....

  • the co-op bank

  • HERE IS MY SONG ...

I like riding my bike because I like riding my bike and not because I am trying to stick it "the man", I like riding my bike because I can ...

    ** Shakes Head **

OK, we get it, you only ride your bike because you like to ride your bike. Does this mean that no-one else is allowed more complex motivations?

Making little wanky songs about sticking it to man because you are riding a bike makes you sound like a tosser, considering I know the poster ... it was a direct go at him ... which I do in person as well.

More complex motivations are fine ...but I hate it when Cycling becomes saving the world from evil capitalism.

  • You could do peer 2 peer loans with Zopa:

I know what you mean - some people take it too far and see themselves as lone eco-ninjas riding head held smug above the smog - but It's the haters in their Chelsea tractors who don't get that our green earth is shrivelling 'neath their treads that bother me.

A feeling of righteousness (just or otherwise) is one of the positive by-products of our hobby, isn't it?

  • thats zopa thing was on the news recently
seems like a good way to spread risk
    micro loans
    quite a clever idea
choose the risk you want to take and the rate of interest you want to earn ( upto a point )

  • also there is the option of sending loads of spam e-mail to nigeria and see if there are any junior members of royalty who can help you smuggle your pounds into their country

  • I don't know anything about them, but could you use an Islamic bank? I think that Sharia does not allow for Usury, so Islamic banks are basically not for profit.

I personally wouldn't since I wouldn't want to sponsor a religious doctrine or organization, but your mileage may vary.

A more sensible idea by far is National savings or Premium Bonds.

No it is by product of being an elitist ... and being elitist is no good for anyone. I am guilty of being slightly elitist, but only in the fact that I believe everyone has a responsibility to educate themselves and not to just go "well I dunno anything about that, I don't care attitude" ... fat chance that is ever going to happen with a education system that is obsessed with teaching children and young adults how to pass an exams than giving them useful transferrable skills.

  • @Machine is bored "A feeling of righteousness (just or otherwise) is one of the positive by-products of our hobby, isn't it?"
are you man enough to be our shepherd........

  • where do you get the mash for all those pies??

  • Fruit pies + mash? No thanks.

Greed (-any interpretation) will out, always.

My own view has always been that usury is immoral, one of the better teachings in the Bible and the Koran.

Sharia - UK Islamic banking (and indeed most - if not all of Islamic banking) - usury / profit (or lack of) = slight of hand.

By way of example. . . . there is a quite wonderful theological/ethical/epistemological/religious/cognitive magic trick performed daily in Iran (I am not aware of how common this is in other Islamic countries) - under Sharia sex outside of marriage is unlawful, but of course human nature cannot (can never) be stemmed so a quite fantastic act is played out on the doors of Iran's brothels ("morality houses") . . .the magic of "temporary marriage" - you - on entry - marry to facilitate prostitution, then once you have fucked, you leave and are divorced.

Similarly Islamic banking in the UK follows a similar slight of hand - the illusion that religious edicts have been followed, interest may not directly flow from unearned sources, but it is re-routed, redefined and renamed in the mould of the better tax magicians.

  • So.. it's a big nasty steaming pile of toss bollocks.. just like the regular cuntbanks?

    Did I read that right?

Yep, just like regular bank accounts, but with some terminology changed - basic equivocation.

Once you have put your money into a Sharia account it cannot be loaned to others (that is against Sharia law !!!) . . . . . but it can be (eh . . . em) "invested" . . . . if you go overdrawn you will certainly not be charged interest (that is against Sharia law !!!), but you will be charged . . (eh . . .em) 'maintenance' . . . . . mortgages are of course not loans (that is against Sharia law !!!) but a lease that as it is paid off reduces the banks share of the house . . . . . etc etc.

Just the usual religious intellectual dishonesty.

    I'd go for the Co-op.

  • I'm going to tell you a story
Once upon a time... a Portuguese emigrant in Canada invested all his money, he had made from fishing business (around US$1 million), into a Co-Op, also run by another portuguese emigrant. This Co-Op was formed by all these micro businesses, mostly portuguese owners, that together were already going strong in terms of investment appeal. Wrong moves, all money lost. Now typically one would expect the are insurance companies behind any investment society, surprise, they weren't insured. The Portuguese fishing fella lost it to booze, then lost his family, then lost his house... went for the guy behind the Co-Op, killed him, was convicted to life, served 10... came out, killed himself. The end.

(keep your money home, in shoe boxes, i do (not really))

  • Tsk, portuguese people eh Nuno? :P

  • I see you keep loading!? ; )

  • A mixed bag, so far, in terms of advice.

The ethical bank suggestions are good, but like I said, I already use those. I have a Smile account, and it's nice to know that arms/sweat shops are not supported.

  • Ok, so I'm reviving an old thread because my bank keeps recommending ISA's to me. Do I want one? Is it different from a savings account?
I am balancing a fine financial rope at them moment where I am still automatically putting a small amount of money (£15 per week) into my savings account even though I am heavily into my overdraft.

Is transferring the bulk of that money (a couple hundred pounds) into an ISA a good idea?

  • Google this: Sin funds, but you would need a small sum before you can invest. Proven track record, even in recession
