Wellbeing – 27 Old Ford Road E2 9PL 020 8980 2092This open level workshop (some experience of yoga preferable but not
essential) will be exploring how we can support the action of the
knees during cycling. We’ll be looking at the possible causes of this
notorious complaint, the musculoskeletal support system around the
knee joint as well as those that directly affect it. The postures will
pay particular attention to gluteus medius as well as the muscles that
attach to the iliotibial band. Recommended for those seeking to
understand, ease or avoid cycle related knee pain. We will have the
opportunity to explore each posture in detail with time for questions
and individual variations.YFC drop-in classes in West London:

That's very cool :)

Might be best to ask in any questions answered given the traffic there but I'll try here first as it seems most appropriate.
I've just started doing yoga at work and I love it. I'd like to practice at home and thought a mat would be a good idea. Can anyone recommend a good one or are they all pretty much the same? There seems to be a bewildering range of options.
During practice I get rather sweaty and my hands tend to slide a bit. Can anyone recommend a non-slip cover for the mat? Again there are many options out there and I've no way to guage their effectiveness without buying one.
-
• #459
They're not all the same, I got a reaally shit slippery one so can't recommend that.
But a chalk bag (same as climbers) helps in that respect. -

Manduka are good, if a bit more expensive than others.
http://www.yogamatters.com/product/1315/mamandproli/manduka-prolite-mat.html
They also do a long version if you are very tall. And they do the more expensive pro mat for the very dedicated.
They also do a 'mat towel' which is good when you get sweaty.
http://www.yogamatters.com/product/1320/mamandtmat/manduka-equa-mat-towel.html
But they are expensive. Depending on how sweaty your hands / feet are you may need to spray it with water to help you grip.

Thanks both. A fellow participant uses chalk and it works for her but I had hoped for a slightly less transient solution which the towel may well provide. Thanks for the advice!

Hello yoga people, my partner has decided, after years of fixing me, it was time to offer a dedicated class to cyclists and runners. I'm far too biased to offer a genuine assessment of her abilities but shes three years qualified, fully insured, and has folded me out of a cramped pretzel of over exertion more times than I care to count.
Details if you're interested are:

Nice one, socialamnesia. The more cyclists have their horrible postures (in which I include myself) corrected, the better. :)

Here's the latest from Rebecca--just as I'm saying her classes are always full, she's secured a larger hall:
Greetings cyclists, yogis and friends,
I hope this finds you all well as Winter makes way for longer (and
hopefully) balmier days! Here is the latest update for April & May:
YFC drop-in classes in West London:
I teach a Yoga for Sports & runners class on Sundays 5.15 - 6.30pm at
Triyoga in Chelsea - 372 King's rd, SW3 5UZ http://www.triyoga.co.uk. These
are ongoing although please note I will not be teaching this coming
Sunday (5th April).YFC course in East London:
We have, at last, managed to secure a larger space for YFC meaning
that hopefully most of you (if not all) who have expressed an interest
should be able to join up. Apologies this has taken a while. The venue
is very near the current one and just next to the Gallery Cafe. 'Tis
the Hall at St. Margaret's House - 21 Old Ford rd, E2 9PL
(http://www.stmargaretshouse.org.uk). I shall endeavour to put up a sign up
on the entrance doors on the day. Any problems, give me a call on the
number below or ask at The Gallery Cafe for directions. The class will run at the same time 7.30 - 9pm on Monday nights
(please note change of day). We will be trialling a 6 week YFC course
in the new space beginning 13th April (ending 18th May). Note too this
includes the May bank holiday on the 4th. We will have three prices
available for the course - £65 for the full six weeks, £55 for 5 weeks
and £45 for four weeks (this price is for those who have completed the
course, not attending week one and are also away during the May bank
holiday). If you have never attended a YFC course, I would strongly
encourage you to attend the first class as this is when the basic YFC
principles will be introduced.Lastly, one-to-one sessions are available at my studio in Kings Cross.
If you have any questions or would like to join the East London
course, please email me and I can pass on payment details/ answer
questions etc. Despite the larger space, places on the course are
still limited, so if you'd like to join/ ensure your place, do let me
know as soon as you are able. I should add that I'll be in relatively
remote parts from Tuesday onwards so my response probably won't be
immediate. I'll be sure to respond shortly after I return on the 8th
April if not before.Wishing you all a wheely and/ or restful Easter break!
Warm wishes,
Rebecca

Hi All,
The yoga studio I go to is running a workshop for cyclists. The workshop is on Sunday 31st July, 3 - 5.30 pm @ Yoga on the Lane in Dalston and will be with Nikita Akilapa who normally teaches at triyoga. More details can be found here: http://www.yogaonthelane.com/workshops/ and to register you can drop an email to yogaonthelane@gmail.com, I have already put my name down. This is a great little studio and my yoga practice has definitely helped me stay injury free. Look forward to seeing some fellow cyclists there!
Thanks
James

+1 for manduka.
They also do a very thin, foldable mat "eKO lite", that's perfect for throwing in your bag, and using on top of (sweaty) studio mats. It's made from natural rubber, very 'grippy'.

Hello, I'm looking to start some yoga for flexibility on the bike but also some meditative type stuff. Too poor and cheap to go to a proper studio. Are there any YouTube channels or is there anything on the WWW that you get me started? Worth going to a few lessons first perhaps to get my technique down?

Do a proper introductory yoga course.
I have been doing yoga for years, practice regularly at home but still go to classes as an instructor can see things and give feedback on things I cant see and am not even aware of.
YouTube videos are too generic and offer no feedback. In a good class the instructor will be offering variations for people who are too stiff/too supple/injured/strong/weak etc none of which a video can take into consideration.

Thanks, will check it out.
Rebecca was teaching at triyoga in Chelsea today, it was a great class. She will be teaching there every Sunday.
