  • Various reasons I suppose, I've always been interested and taken part in sports, fitness, and finding new ways of improving my strength, balance, flexibility and all of that.
So thats one reason, to try something new that achieves a new level of all of those things. Another reason is the spirituality side, I don't at all claim to have a good knowledge of buddhism, (although would like to improve this as well) but through spending some time travelling in Asia and looking into the belief/religion I recognise that through yoga and similar practices a person can become more aware of their own beliefs and thoughts, let alone being a good way of focusing a hectic london and design addled brain!
I guess another reason would be that a cousin of my Yugoslavian grandma (don't know what that makes him to me, great cousin maybe?) is a well regarded Yogi who practices all over the world, especially in India, so I at some point would finally like to meet him and have something in common with him.
Sure theres many other less deep meanings like it makes you look good in track pants and vest!

  • interesting, thanks for that. It seems so often we gravitate towards things due to personality traits, and influences i guess 'nurture'.
There really is no need to believe anything to do with religion as a yogi, although the roots may have been in the East, the practice is entirely practical.
At the same time, practice regularly and you will develop spiritually, becoming more grounded, whole, actually- you.
People often get confused thinking that yoga is about going to the mountaintop, achieving some lofty detached enlightenment ideal, we're working at a kitchen sink level, day to day, where are you at today, really, work from there,?
One of the unwritten things that comes as one of the best benefits is that all the internal organs get to function, you literally breath the body into animation.
If you read, just get 'Light On Yoga' Iyengar. Its all in there. Good luck.

  • Thanks again, I guess its a bit of a cliche the religion, yoga relationship but I'm sure that the way the practice makes you feel as a person allows for more of an open minded view on life and everything around you, which I guess leads to a questioning, and onto beliefs.... maybe, speculation and purely my own thoughts but it seems to make some sense!
I'm looking forward to starting now, I'll look into the book as well.
Oh btw, the Isle of Wight off road ride was pretty good, its definitely not flat that place, made for a good epic ride!

You might have mentioned earlier in the thread, so apologies, but how long have you been interested in and practicing yoga? You have a hell of a lot of knowledge about it all by the looks of things!

  • Definitely suitable for beginners, Simon. Come along! 29th July will be the next one.

  • I'm gonna try and make the next one.

  • yeah s1mon, as oliver said this course is great for beginners! i had never done any yoga before, and although i'm fairly active, i've never been particularly flexible, and climbing alot hasn't really helped! haha. the course develops during the 6 weeks, so if you start from the first week you'll be fine! the classes are usually pretty small too, so you get pretty much one to one guidance on the poses and you are always encouraged to go your own pace. i've really enjoyed it and even though i've only been doing it for a few months now, i can feel an improvement in a lot of poses, which is a really satisfying feeling!

  • I started yoga a few years ago, having done a few different martial arts as a teenager, it felt very familiar and easy to pick up. But my work kept me moving every few months for the last few years, so I didn't carry on with it. Given the recurrent back problem I keep getting though, I know I really should do some yoga. So it looks like this thread landed in my lap at a really handy time.

  • Any recommendations for a good ashtanga yoga classes/teachers in East London?

  • Definitely suitable for beginners, Simon. Come along! 29th July will be the next one.

Great news! Cheers Oliver, will come down on the 29th then!

  • late bump!! course starts again this evening :)

  • I couldn't make it tonight, after all--arm sore again. Really hoping to come next week! Hope you will have had a good time, Sam!

  • :) superb session, I was in a Zen like state until I got at puncture on bishopsgate. See you all next week. Oliver hope to see you there :)

  • Classes still on Thursdays? How much are they?

  • Yes. It should still be £10 per individual session. I'm hoping to go this Thursday for the first time in a long time.

  • I think it's £10.50 now Oliver.

  • Ah, shite, inflation striking again. ;)

  • August greetings all,

Back from the extraordinary country that is Colombia - brilliant country for cycling and yoga - very inspiring, anyone been?

And delighted to read all manner of interesting thread exchanges!

Thank you so much to those who have answered questions while I've been away - Oliver - good to see you last weekend and really glad to hear the elbow managed the DD. Look forward to seeing you again in class! miss_socks - good seeing you in class and congratulations on your news! and *m.f of the ever inspiring practice and reflection - still practicing on beaches and rooftops? Thought of you whilst practicing in the shade of a rock on the Tayrona coast!

Indeed the course started last week and what a great bunch of students! I enjoyed it thoroughly - for those lfgss'ers who attended, thank you for making my return to London feel entirely brilliant. Having returned the previous night, I was still a little jet-lagged, but felt quite renewed after class! Lots of you so not sure who I may have met yet! Sorry to hear about the puncture Zed, they certainly can be a zen testing moment! S1mon, I'm assuming I've met you now if you made it to class last Thursday? Maybe Tea_Bee too?

PiersW, Jed teaches an Astanga class at bodywise, she is currently away and is being replaced by Emma throughout August. The courses/ beginners classes are on the weekends and there are early morning classes too...

So, just to clarify all prices (as these will be the same for the rest of the year I think!). The courses are 5 weeks long - £44 full/£31 conc for the course or £10.50 full/ £7 conc to attend on a drop-in basis.

Just seen the time, gotta go teach, thoughts on the spiritual/ practical to come soon! Good food for thought.

    namaste...

  • hi everyone, sorry to hijack your thread rebecca, i didn't want to make another yoga thread that's all. but i was just wondering if anyone knew of any good yoga classes in SE london (dulwich, herne hill, camberwell, brixton area)?

  • Rebecca's been wanting to start one down there for a while but hasn't found a suitable space. If you can find one, she may be game. I think there was some discussion of it further upthread.
