  • have you copied the relevant files/folders from library/application support and user/library/address book plug-ins ( to be on the safe side)?

although, frankly - it may be that the g4 just doesn't have the raw processing power to cope with displaying a name and address. it may be time to face up to things.

    Yes.

    I think you mean G5.

  • I need to borrow OSX Tiger disc if anyone has one around east somewhere please.
I woke up to my laptop Harddrive making clunking noises this morning and it won't boot.
Want to try a couple of things.

  • howto: YouTube - How to Replace iPod Video LCD Screen Display 5th Gen 5G

    screen: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LCD-Display-Screen-For-Apple-iPod-5G-Video-30%2f60%2f80-GB_W0QQitemZ220669652095QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=143495475003&rvr_id=143495475003&cguid=002431ed11d0a0e204618e81ff177ce3%3D#ht_2217wt_1139

doesn't look too hard. would give it a go on my own but not sure i would trust my hands with others

Cheers for that link again, just did the screen now, quite fiddly without tweezers or micro-screwdrivers (used a kitchen knife instead) but doable with a bit of effort.

  • it's not a sale thread so i can bump right? bump

  • tiger eh - not sure if I've still got those disks, will have a trawl

  • I don't have a retail tiger disk, but should have a grey disc set that came with my macbook.. Can check if you want it, though I'm out west..

But if you just want to run disk utility to check for filesystem errors, I think you could do this w/ a (snow) leopard disk just as well. Clicking noises, not a good sign! Might want to see if you can boot to target disk mode and try to get your files first thing.

  • Dan anything tiger or below even . Ott- Lepord utlities good idea I know people with those discs I can try that . Grey ones are model specific I think .

  • Couldn't find mine last night but I can borrow an old office copy and lend it to you - you'd have to bring it back tomorrow as it's not really mine to give out. Pick up from Marylebone High St?

  • anyone interested in a boxed, excellent condition (new GPU tho, orignal in a box) G4 cube?
would make a great server, media hub, etc. has the 17" lcd studio display to match. perfect.
if anyone suggests a good price i'll let it go. its shiny and nice. :D

    450mhz cpu
    1.5gb ram
    20gb hd
    airport
geforce 2 MX graphic card (also got the original)
all the leads, speakers, keyboard, mouse, etc etc.
    power supply
    boxed

the monitor isn't boxed tho. meh.

10 years old. a design classic. etc. :P

  • Anyone want an airport express? Got me one but never use it

£45 and it's yours. boxed and everything

  • anyone interested in a boxed, excellent condition (new GPU tho, orignal in a box) G4 cube?

a few years ago I tried to get 4 G4 cubes to use a a cheesy coffee table. I could not find all four cheap enough to justify it.

  • ok so i have installed leopard onto my dads G4 but that has stopped iphoto from working. I tried to reinstall it from the panther start up disk but couldn't find anything but the option to reinstall all of panther.
Could I try the tiger install disks for my macbook or do I need to get ilife to have iphoto back or am I missing something?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Oh dear. This just reminds me of triforce...

You won't be able to downgrade the OS without a complete re-install, so you won't be able to install using the discs for a macbook either (plus discs that come with mac laptops are normally specific to that model)...

    My advice would be:

    a) The easy option.. just learn to love without iPhoto, it's shit and super intensive for older macs to run - especially with a new OS. Import your photo's using image capture and view them with preview.

    b) do a complete wipe and install with panther or tiger.

  • Thank you - my parents wont mind not having iphoto I guess and I didn't know image capture existed and getting photos from the camera to the mac was the main worry.

Can anyone recommend any good freeware for storing photos in albums that isn't online like flikr?

  • Adobe Bridge? Or Picassa (it is online but there's also an app you can d/l here that organises your photos: http://picasa.google.com/mac/)
    .. or Apeture

Or you could just use finder folders. Best option really.

  • yeah, there is this new feature that apple created as part of the GUI, they are called folders ...

    [sorry, nothing helpful to post]

  • Thanks dan I'll send those suggestions on to my parents.
Picassa looks good but they have a power pc not intel g4 uuuurrrgghhh.

My parents would find it easier if they could look through photos in albums than having to open folders and save them neatly as they aren't as savvy as some of you smart arses cough branwen cough

  • zing

by the way - i take it you've tried doing a software update etc to make iphoto work? Or you could try just re-installing it and importing the photo library?

  • Off topic - one for the lfgss mac heads -

my work G5 (late 2004 dual 2.5) is dead. getting two red leds after the post. one at the top and one around 4 inches below (all the post leds are seemingly tucked in behind the cpu's). a new mac is on the way but does anyone know a fix for this? seems a shame to waste all that mac. i read stuff on apple forums about the power supply, some about the ram being bad, some about the cpu's dying. anyone got any experience with this?

    spec:
    10.4.1
    2gb ram
    150gb drive x 2
    dual 2.5ghz

    symptoms:
    power on
    chime
    then top red led
one minute later the bottom led
fans start up to full roar
    black screen all the way

  • Sorry to hijack, but don't think it warrants a new thread... I have a dead imac G5 (motherboard apparently) cluttering up the place. Anyone know what i should do to dispose of it considering that there may be sensitive* material on the HD? Perhaps someone can harvest the components??

*pron, literally up to the hilt with it.

  • Matt: Have you run hardware test (utilities when booting from your OS X disk that came with the Mac)?

Braker: Your iMac G5 likely has bulged resistors on the main board... if you winge enough Apple may replace the board for you (it was a manufacturing/hardware flaw in the iMac G5 line).

Regarding your HD, just take it out and destroy it or implant it in a new machine?

    dibs the HD

  • literally up to the hilt

    euphemism?

  • will it boot into single user mode? do you have applejack installed?
tried booting from a firewire backup? (you have aback-up don't you?)
boot from disk or back-up and run disk utility/hardware check?
startup in target mode and get another mac to repair/verify disk?
try starting up with no startup items then login (holding shift key)
