It sounds like it just got filled up and your friend maybe ignored the "Startup disk getting full" warnings.
OSX needs at minimum 10% free space to function normally, add to that, SSDs also have the same free-space requirements to operate normally.
Do a backup, just in case the thing is dying and then move as much stuff as possible to an external drive. Update it to El Cap and see what happens. It's more than capable of running it but it sounds like storage-related issues, one way or another.

Thanks for your input..
Did a backup but did not upgrade to El Capitan just yet as there's compatibility issues with some programs my friend uses.
Freeing up some more space seems to have helped the thing run smoothly.
I also learned that while unsuccessfully repairing permissions that there's an official list of
messages that you can safely ignore. -

My early 2011 13" macbook pro is starting to show visual glitches every now and again, and the other day it shut off with no warning.
Could it be bad ram? I've got 16gb in there, though apple tells me I can only use 8gb...
Or it might be on its way out completely. Was hoping it'll last me until next round of intel processors makes it to macbook pro's, but it might not make that far...

Hmm... They have a free repair program for 15" and 17' models from that year that suffer from similar symptoms but not the 13".
Try putting the OG ram back in (if you still have it) but it sounds more video-related, even though it uses integrated graphics. -
• #8656
yeah it looks exactly like my previous 15" who died the graphic card death that apple fixed for free
-
• #8657
I'd take it to them and go ¯_(ツ)_/¯

New iMacs are out today! 21.5" now comes in retina flavour.
Also, new keyboard, mouse and trackpad. All have built-in Li-ion batteries.

Yep, happened to my 2008 and my 2012. Sodding gpus melt the logic boards. Both fixed for free, on pain of Sale of Goods Act of 1979

Wordy puff piece. Helped pass my lunch break.

Hmm. Didn't know about the Magic Mouse 2. I was initially sceptical that a li-ion battery would be more environmentally friendly (as I presume it's not replaceable) but the article says it lasts a month per charge, and the average life span of a li-ion battery is 1,000 charges, so that suggests it would last 83 years. Or I've got my maths wrong.
Now, is it better for me to keep using rechargeables in my Magic Mouse 1 (given the carbon footprint of a new mouse)?
-
• #8662
Yeah, I use rechargeables in mine but it eats through 'em pretty fast. I get about 2 weeks on a full tank, using eneloops.

I bought a logitech solar powered keyboard and rechargeable trackpad. I win.
I don't see why, with all that glass area, the trackpad could not be solar powered. -

Personally, a good old wired gaming mouse last ages.

Only the very top gpu on this new batch exceeds my gtx775m. Feel I made the right decision for gaming (non retina - nvidia).

What would be a good price for an iPhone 6+ (old model) 64gb?

eBay has buy it now prices around £425

So that less 17%?

But looks fugly and isn't designed to specifically work with Macs so has no gesture support (the latter to me when using OS X is pretty much essential).
-
• #8671
How useful is gesture support with a mouse (as opposed to trackpad)? I tried one the other day and found it pretty awkward compared to a mouse with wheel/buttons/etc.

tl;dr
-
• #8673
Give it a few hours and it's second nature. I use a wacom for everything but finder where I usually mouse instead as it's a lot quicker

isn't designed to specifically work with Macs.
That's a fair point, as most of the button is redundant, but then, there aren't many in the first place on a Macintosh mouses.

Interesting. 13 or 15"?
Yea that seemed to be the major issue.
I freed-up 20GB and since it's booting normally - but continues to be rather laggy;
also apparently unable to repair permissions on a couple of entries, including a warning concearning a SUID-file.
So unshure whether restoring OS is worth the trouble (and if yes - whether it's wise to go Capitan with this machine).
