  • Didn't think this applied to the 13", just the 15 and 17

  • I didn't know SakeFist's was 13inch.

  • Sounds pretty legit if you ask me. Maybe it received some knocks during transport? I think it would be a lot of time and effort to switch out any parts. But then I am always far too trusting of people.

  • Unfortunately it doesn't really matter if he's screwing you or not. Paypal will refund his money if you don't and you'll end up with negative feedback. Sadly the only way to handle these cases is suck it up. The best you can hope for is that it's easy to fix the problem yourself and you handle the customer well enough not to get a black mark.

  • It's a tough one but @Airhead's right... I sold a mate my old MBP just before I left the UK, a week later it stopped working... I took it home to check it out and found a big dent in the side of it that wasn't there when I handed it over...

I offered to give him his money back anyway but he took it on the chin...

  • Thanks. Can't get my head round it failing within a week of leaving my hands but will issue the refund and see how defective it is upon return.

  • Hope you find it's a simple fix and you can get it back on the market. I always take the precaution of quietly adding the buyer to my banned list, I wouldn't want to sell to them again and it makes me feel better.

  • Failing just after you decide to sell does sound fishy, but looking at it another way, failing just after having a dozen postal gorillas throw it from pallet to van, from one end of a warehouse to another, through sorting facilities and then more vans, it sounds a lot less coincidental.

  • PSA: iOS is out... Downloading on all the things now.

  • Yes. Running a hack based on a tonymacx86 recommended build:
    http://www.tonymacx86.com/

I'd recommend this approach. His recommendations have all been tested to make sure they work and if you use his installation instructions/software it's incredibly easy.

I made it harder for myself by using an unsupported processor and graphics card which involved a bit more work but I used to have a completely unsupported DIY hackintosh and it is so so much easier than that.

Hackintosh purists don't like tonymacx86, I think because he makes it too easy for people.

  • What is your Hack? I should have mine tomo... funny you mention purists don't like tonymacx86, elitism in ever clique I guess!

  • It's based on a Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H, which is a relatively cheap (£58) motherboard, with an i5 3570 processor and 16Gb of half decent (1600Mhz, DDR3) RAM. Didn't spend lots on anything as my old hack literally blew up, £275 for the motherboard, ram and processor, reused most of the other bits including my old 8800GT graphics card.

I built it in October 2012 and it's done sterling service since then. Upgraded the graphics card fairly recently to a 750ti. It's currently running 10.10.3 but only because I haven't got round to installing the 10.10.5 update yet.

  • 8800GT

That's a blast from the past.

I'm curious to hear the story of your old one literally blowing up....

  • It's not that exciting to be honest. First hack build was from 2008, so it lasted four years, but I'm not sure the PSU ever had quite enough power - at least it did for standard running but I'd overclocked it a lot mostly because the Q6600 was very overclockable.

One day it died and there was a pop and a strong smell of burning, so after pulling the plug and letting it cool I had a look and the lead from the PSU had melted onto the motherboard which was scorched. Still not sure if it was the PSU/pushing it too hard for too long or if something just failed but didn't dare use the motherboard, memory or processor again after that happened. Had to buy new bits anyway because obviously they'd changed the processor slot again.

My 750ti uses less power than the 8800GT which is ridiculous given the performance increase.

  • Going back to the ebay MBP issue...
Macbook Pros of any age seem to have logic board/GPU issues - it's hard to distinguish the two since the GPU is glued on I think. My old (2008?) MBP had its logic board replaced under the sale of goods act, and my 2012 RMBP had its logic board replaced last year under euro consumer law. And it seems to be failing again, the same kernel panics/Nvidea errors in the crash report.

  • Oh yeah! I remember now - I think I even recommended some PSUs to you.

  • Yup, there have been a few problematic generations. The early 2011s had it worst.

  • Would be very annoying if my current one dies now and they refuse to repair it again. Think we're mid-cycle on the laptops, waiting on new updates early next year.

  • We should see a Skylake refresh soon.

  • And a retina imac with a new gpu puleeeezeeee.

  • Early 2016, according to Macrumors.
Also, Skylake sounds eerily close to Skynet.

  • I'd like to replace my iPad mini with an iPad Air 2, is this a silly time to do so, or is the current model likely to continue for the next 12 months?

  • Probably not going to get updated for a while, seeing as they've only just done an iPad event. Maybe in 6 months an Air 3 will be out but I'd guess they wont get updated until this time next year.

  • Is it worth waiting for a new mbp or are they just going to lose ports/get more expensive?

  • Prices normally stay roughly the same, they just get updated processors and gpus. My work is intensive for both, so worth waiting if I can.
