So, my 6y old PowerBook G4 died last week (HD).
It took to the grave around 50GB of files I had not made any backup, actually
it crashed in the middle of backing everything up.
Got the repair done quite pronto (£100, new 160GB HD, max for G4s), and the
problem now is getting the Data from the fecked HD...
I've contacted these guys - www.ontrackdatarecovery.co.uk - said to be the best on the market. It happens that these guys quoted the recovery jobie in 600 squid!
I'm so lost now, I don't see any other way to get those files back besides parting with the cash. Anyone care to add helpful info? Please?DiskWarrior is doing it DiskWarrior-ish magic just right - no problems there (you gotta love DiskWarrior) - .....
:ODiskWarrior did nothing for me....
Anyone know someone who can do repairs on macs? The fan on my macbook pro has started acting up and the superdrive has stopped working?
PM me.

i think you should pay the £600, then maybe, next time, you'll BACK UP

hey folks i have a question for the mac heads.
i'm trying to tranfer all my files and documents from an old g4 to a g5 using a firewire cable, the instructions are to restart the g4 while holding down the 't' key until you see the fire symbol, but when holding the 't' down this just switches he g4 off when restarting. is there any other way to do this to transfer all my stuff?

target mode should work like that, there must be some problem.
just take the drive out of the G4 and put it in a spare slot in the G5. takes 2 mins.

try pressing 'T' after you restart, after the chime, but before it properly boots up.

• #583
thanks, i'll try both

Thanks buddy, you just made me feel so much better : ).
Can you send me your picture so I can start with the death wishes voodoo crap?

OK, I've a G4 that the previous owner (via freecycle) has forgotten the password for. Handy.
Am I right in thinking I can just reboot it all with a new OS disc? And can anyone lend me one?
-
• #589
Yep, you can reset the password for a user account with the original disk, or just reinstall the OS and start over.
It's also fairly trivial to use Network Utility to change user passwords on old macs.

I am looking forward to getting an iPad... my macbookpro will become my new desktop.
Transferring files - why not simply use the drop box, or at the desktop GO "connect to server" and logon to the target machine that way?
Cheers

Because that would be painfully slow... and would require the user to be logged in.

Quick question, has anyone with a macbook or macbook pro ever had any problems with their keyboards?
My right arrow key and my inverted comma/apostrophe key have both stopped working. Ive carefully taken off the keys and cleaned beneath them but this did bugger all. Im fairly certain its a software issue.
Anyone got any ideas?

It's unlikely to be a software issue. Is it a first gen MB/MB Pro? If you're within the warranty take it to the Apple Store. It's likely to be a loose connection from lots of whacks to a first-gen model or some sort of moisture/impact problem on a later model.
You could try firing some compressed air around once the keys are off, or a bit of gentle hair dryer heating... long-shot though.

That happened to my G4 Powerbook, some keys on the right hand side of the keyboard started dying... Very odd, Apple recommended a replacement... I put up with it for a while then someone spilled a glass of wine over it... I bought a new one... Problem solved!
-
• #595
Im pretty sure its a first gen, bought it in late 2006.
Ive used compressed air before and it did nothing. How long does the warranty last, probably not 4 years? My protection plan jobbie has also expired. Itll probably cost a bomb to fix it.
Cheers for the help jono

Yup, the same thing's happened to Go! Ellis' mac too. The letter L no longer works, which makes life interesting...
Jeanstain, you wouldn't have OS discs to hand would you (and those phono cables)?
-
• #597
The first gen keyboards were prone to key failure more than the later models, but it can happen to any keyboard. You can buy a replacement keyboard/top section fairly cheap on eBay (£30 - £50) and they're easy to fit... or you could re-map your keys around the problem if the machine's not used that often?

This seems like a very good idea. I dont think ive ever used the little key in between the apple key and the left arrow key, its almost in the right place too.

I just had the top case replaced cause my kb and trackpad were freezing after about 5 minutes of use. it'd cost around 300euros but warranty covered it. it's a mb pro from 2008
