Tough one... Macs and 3D software don't really go.. but you can always dual boot.
It'll have to be a 13inch Retina, but max out the ram as you cant upgrade later, annoyingly...Defo dont let her buy a windows laptop, in 8 years I have only worked in one place which had windows and I felt it frustrating and hard to use, because I was not used to it, thats the boat she will be in but the other way round...
I've used windows PCs for years for web development, and only ever used Macs for testing. In my new job they gave me a 13 inch retina MacBook Pro, and now the situation is reversed. It is so much better in terms of workflow, performance and usability. Apart from the dumb keyboard layout with no #
The 15 inch Retina can be had with a decent graphics chip. Maybe that will handle 3D well? -

That would be too expensive.

I know about alt 3. It just annoys me that for that one thing I need to switch to alt instead of shift. And yes I know I can swap that, but I like my keys to do what they say. Which is why I also put up with the standard ctrl option cmd order too, and then wonder why I can't copy and paste in Parallels or Citrix windows...

I mean, what the fuck is the § / ± key for? Couldn't they have put the pound and euro symbols there?

Crossed over into white noise a bit there Niall, sorry.

BQ, if you specify a US keyboard you get # without having to use alt. That whole § / ± annoyed the hell out of me too.

Installed an extra 4 of ram (8gb now) and an SSD (crucial m500) into my 2.26 c2d macbook pro

The charger for my white plastic macbook has given up the ghost - it wont charge with the other MBP chargers knocking about. Where can I get one of them (the one with the square charger bit)?
-

Apple store. They still sell Magsafe 1 chargers.

Got my ipad nicked yesterday from the car. They managed to get a window down without leaving a mark. Fuckers.
Need one for work so will get an ipad mini retina, nice as such but could really do with not spending an extra 400 this month

That sucks!
I have one of the retina mini's though, and they are great so silver linings?!

• #5269
Yeah little bit. Was hoping to spend any surplus monies on a lens instead, but hey ho

I'm getting tempted to build a hackintosh... want a headless mac with more power than the current Mini's and they are dragging their heals on Haswell/Iris updates... even found a nice case....

I've seen some folks get awesome speed out of old Dell box hackintoshes and the like.
-
• #5273
Just priced one up at 750... i7, 2 drives, but that works out as the same price as a mini with fusion? Hmmm...
-
• #5274
Until apple updates firmware that stops you hackintosh working? Vaguely remember someone telling me they do this?
-
• #5275
Yeah, always get seduced by temptations of "MacPro performance for Mini price" then add it all up and it comes to pretty much the same. Bah. Sure you could build some POC for sub £400, but the Minis are great and start at £500...
