all I want to do is sync a mp3 from the c25k plan. It's not for $$$, it's not on iTunes store, and I don't / can't install iTunes where I am.

Fuck it, I guess I'll just stream the damn thing via the web. Seems retarded that I can do that perfectly fine WITHOUT iTunes, but I can't download + play it via Music ...

Yeah if you chat to an  Mac genius who has been there in the old days should be able to help easily. Those were the good old days where knowledge was king.  If not message me and I will help.

Annoying glitch with my MBP – when I open it up it flicks to whichever program I wasn't using last, e.g. I'll be using Chrome, close the lid, open it up a while later and Spotify jumps to the front. Happens with whatever I have open so it's not program-specific. Sounds minor but it's super annoying, especially as it gives you a second to start doing something before it jumps. Any ideas?

What OS system are you running. i.e. 10.6/10.7/10.8 etc

You can also choose to not restore windows once a session is closed in your system preferences>>>>under the general tab 

My iPhone just threw a wobbly (3GS) and is now asking me to plug it into iTunes. Problem is I'm in France on holiday and laptop is in London. Second problem is that I assume it'll want to restore from backup and I have pics I need on here that - for some reason - haven't been uploading to the cloud while I've been away, despite having wifi at the hotel.

Can anyone save my pics? Or, best case scenario, just make my phone start working again?

Yeah put your iPhone into disk mode. Easy.

When at a computer - any computer instructions will work regardless pc/mac

• Turn your iPhone off by holding down the sleep/hold button in the top right corner until the slider appears at the top. Slide it. If your phone won't respond to that, hold the sleep/wake button and the home button together until the screen goes dark.
  
• When the phone is off, hold down the home button and connect the USB cable (which should still be attached to your computer) to the dock connector. The iPhone will turn on and display the Apple logo. Keep holding the home button until the iTunes logo/USB cable appear on the screen. You can let it go then. The phone is now in recovery mode.
  
• If the red empty battery icon appears onscreen, let the phone charge for a few minutes and then restart this process.
  
• When the phone is in recovery mode, a window will pop up in iTunes saying that the phone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored.
  
• You can IGNORE iTunes. Open up an image importer app e.g. on the Mac its called Image Capture..Its installed on every mac.
  
• It will read the contents on your iPhone.
  
• Choose import all photos.
  
• Job Done. 
  

Don't think you can access iPhones as a drive. Gutted.

You can easily.
If you put it into recovery mode you have access to photos

if you use an App like Disk Explorer you can recover chats, photos etc.



Man, I spend hours yesterday trying to retrieve a blank dvd from the optical drive of my imac. Tried every fix i could find on teh netz but none worked as the drive wasn't registering the disc and just kept spooling up, clunking horribly then starting again. Ended up with a cake-slice coated in sticky tape jammed in the slot rapidly losing patience and in danger of frying the machine and myself.

Eventually leaving it for a few hours and re-booting in single user mode (for about the tenth time) spat it out. Can't really blame the machine as when it did eventually reappear it turns out that the disc I'd been trying to burn, being the last one in the stack, had got a blank circle of clear plastic stuck to it. I don't noticed and had jammed both into the drive.

Can anyone remind me how to get a file I've imported onto my itunes library to synch to the cloud and then to my tethered iphone? I've done it before but I also recall being stumped by this before... something about... nope. I can't remember how to do it. *googles

First - to force eject a cd
Restart your mac and click and hold down the trackpad.
This will force eject a cd

Second - Your OS has been designed once connected to the power after you reboot your mac it will do a POST(Powered On Self Test) and try automatically to force eject.

Third - if it is unable to do so at boot while your OS is running and logged in it checks every now and then again to make sure all associated hardware is functioning. So you could wait it out connected to the power

IF after many attempts it is unable to do so. Book a genius bar appointment and any half decent genius will be able to open up you Mac extract your optical drive and click the manual eject button inside or simply open the optical drive and take it out. 

Yeah just conned your device to iTunes. Select your device in the sidebar. (If you have upgraded to the new version of iTunes your sidebar is hedde. - you can enable it again under the View Menu>>>Show sidebar.)

Then click on whatever tab you are interested in syncing. i.e. photos/music etc. then click sync.

Anyone recommend a youtube video grabber that they've used? [free]

Use Firefox and add one of the many firefox plugins that are constantly updated to download videos and take full page scrolling screenshots. The use Safari for all the rest. Enjoy 

Too long behind the bar I use to dream about apple queries. Damn...but I had some fond memories. I haven't been back to visit in a while still.

Having trouble the with BBC Radio widget (the Phantom Gorilla one) in OS X 10.6.8.
Haven't used it for ages, but now I come to use it and it doesn't work. Just does the pinwheel thing for a bit and then nothing. Can't click on the 'i' to flip it over and change station either.
Also has these wierd non-functioning scroll bars attached to it now.
Have deleted and re-downloaded a new one three times, still no joy.
Same widget works perfect on wife's MBP.

Can anyone recommend a replacement or solution?
I'm outside the UK, btw.

Thanks man. will look at that again tonight. pretty sure I've tried synching from pretty much every available tab. It works one way i.e. stuff i've downloaded to my phone appears in my itunes library, but stuff that Ive created in, or opened with itunes on the mac doesn't synch to the phone.

In fact. scrap all that, I've asked the wrong question. I don't really want it on the phone, I want it one the cloud along with all of my other music, which I can then access on the phone. That's what's not happening.

It's not free, but it's very good.
Add / remove media through browser-based interface (over wifi only though), do ftp-transfers etc. etc.

My MacBook has suddenly decided to stop booting. I power it on, get the booting music then it just displays a blank white screen, with no Apple logo.

Any tips as to how I diagnose what's wrong?

Do you have a standard HDD? Can you hear the HDD spin up? I think the "white screen of death" is usually associated w/ a hard drive failure.

Have you tried booting from the repair CD / USB and running disk utility?

...or just buy an iMac.... anyone interested in a mac mini? 2.3 i5 500GB + 128 GB SSD 8GB ram? £550
