Any suggestions on why my 2009 MBP is running slower and slower these days? Seems to take forever to do simple things now (calculator take over 2 minutes to open sometimes!!!) and stuff like Photoshop and browsers can take an age to close gumming up the whole system. I've tried cleaning/fixing permissions, I've got more than enough free disk space and it only seems to be these past few months that I've noticed the slow down. Any ideas? Should I just back everything up and do a clean install of OSX?

how often do you reboot? I shut my work machine off every night and it certainly helps, it's a massive difference if I run it for a few days straight.

I shut my machine down every night so I boot up every morning. I think a clean install is probably what Ill end up doing and that at least gives me an excuse to upgrade to mountain lion. Its just a bit frustrating that Ive been using my MBP for over three years without issue but now its starting to noticeably under perform.

Licences are cheap and worth it, but you can use it for free if you a prepared to dismiss a dialog ever 10 tracks.

@ photoben, all my music resides on my computer, I have no need to rescue tracks from an ipod. That reminds me I'll probably need to back it all up, just in case...

^^should be able to find both on ebay, the power adapters can be a bit expensive though

You can turn it back on in the View menu...

read up about it, it's not that easy... new format for the library etc, so there's a risk to lose playlists, stats, etc

only for spares/repairs, motherboard is no good and hard drive is being removed today.
