Do you mean a backup of the documents I'd like to keep? I keep everything I need in dropbox, or for video files and projects they're on a separate RAID.
If you mean some sort of installing backup device mcthingamy - then no. How does one procure such a thing?

Hopefully this will help. You can create a bootable DVD or a memory stick which will help if you have a blank HD. Right?

Ta very much K
I'll save it and watch it on the train - if I get a space.
I have an HD with me which I could make blank, but I would prefer to get a small one in the morning specifically for this.
Alternatively I have a 16GB USB key with me but it's kind of unreliable. That or maybe the USB ports are... :S /sigh

You'd need 8GB memory stick to do this.

And what do you mean by "done"?
Thanks, people.
David, I know about that service, just wanted first to see if there's someone locally or a forumenger. It should definitely be possible to be done cheaper. I only know about that service because I saw a company car with the logos splashed on the side and hence looked it up when you asked.
What I didn't mention is that the company car was a very high end Jag... so they must be profiting something silly (and therefore overpricing themselves) to afford that. Unless it was the CEO I spotted driving around.

Ha!
people will use it, because it's marketed well and easy to access (you simply order a postage box for a teener and get a £10 voucher in return). All quick and easy, better that sending to some guy somewhere in your own packaging. -

I'll call you after all this christmas mess.

Right. This has been a shit night.
I downloaded the lion update onto my previous snow leopard install - but didn't put a copy on a back-up drive before I installed it. Partly because I'm an idiot who didn't think, but also partly because you'd think it wouldn't auto-delete.
But that's fine. You can download old purchases from the app-store right?
Well I went in - clicked on it. Nada. Tried option clicking. Nada.
Currently it's not even showing in my list of purchases.
Though when I click on the actual Lion icon within the app store, it says 'Installed' however, no amount of option-clicking (on a 13" mbp keyboard if that makes a difference?) will get it to say "Install"
This is ever so fucking annoying. Tips? Solutions?
Don't really want to go back to London today to the apple store to sort it out - but can if essential. Can I download on another machine? There's an old macbook - 2008 I think running snow leopard here..?

Potentially problem solved - will report back later
Method 1: Use a Mac with app store that has not downloaded Lion. Using the App Store account that originally purchased Lion, start your download. Apple allows the use of Lion on all your Mac for $30.

Piss-tits. It's running 10.5.8. Don't have snow leopard discs with me or I wouldn't be in this mess at 7 in the morning on christmas pissing eve having not yet slept.

I'm a machine.
Go to App Store
Hit Store Tab on the top
View Account
Log In
View Hidden Purchases
UnHide Lion
Alt-Click Purchase Tab in App-Store
Lion should now be Installable.
It's downloading now - fingers crossed.
On the plus side I get to see dawn in the countryside. Saw some stars last night for the first time in about 8 months.

You'll be going back to Snow Leopard in no time :-)

If I could find my SL discs I'd never have bloody bothered : ) but I needed to install a brand new hard drive with Mac OS so I could install bootcamp and run Win 7 :)
Also - from what I've read you you can't revert back to snow leopard from lion as it does something to the firmware of the machine?
11 minutes remaining on the download, then I'm going to try and burn a dvd of it, or plonk it on a USB.
Then sleep...

To make you feel better, I'm trying to install Lion for some time now. With no luck.
I had to chuck/move away loads of stuff last night to make the backup file 70GB smaller (it didn't fit into Time Machine's space anymore). Backup finished its run this morning, so I will try and partition the HD today and try a clean install of Lion.
At the moment it's stuck at 33 min (a common thing), despite the HD being verified and permissions repaired.
I really need to install Lion to get access to iCloud. It's vital for me since I swapped iPhone for an Android phone.
It all starts annoying me. If I wanted Windows Vista with its bullshit I'd buy a Dell computer. -

I'm pretty sure you can.
I use a Lion install DVD, but it still asks you for apple store id when reinstalling, so what I did was reinstall SL (which must have wiped the firmware), then once that was installed I reinstalled Lion again, and that time it doesn't ask for apple store id (which it doesn't when using the Lion DVD to install an old Mac with SL on it).
So in short I think reinstalling SL wipes whatever changes Lion makes to the firmware.

It's all in the past friendly Apples.
Like. A. Boss.
Managed to burn a copy of a back-up disc which I will treasure for all eternity.
Then I swapped out the HDD for an SSD - didn't short out the circuitry = bonus.
Booted - had to format the SSD and panicked a bit when no drive was recognised - need to change GUID settings etc.
But now I have a lovely fast SSD currently running Lion and soon to be running 64 bit win 7 - all of which my client is paying for.
All it took was 14 worrying hours without sleep.
A stiff drink, a power nap while W7 installs and then back to work.

hah! I could really do with putting an SSD in my macbook pro, but dont have the money, or the minerals to do it.

I couldn't install from the download. I had problem with a burned DVD.
Then I partitioned the HD and restored the new 8GB partition with the extracted installer's dmg.
And then it went better than expected - besides the fact that the first 10 mins of installation took 2.5 hrs. While there, I also made a 1GB recovery USB stick:

750GB 2.5" Western digital or 1TB 2.5" Toshiba for almost the same price.
Anyone know anything to choose between the two?
Have you a backup, dear boy?
