  • Mac is it would appear fucked tried to boot up in target mode and nothing appeared on the desktop and faint ticking sound heard from drive, though there are four inside there so not sure which one! Have an appointment with apple on Monday midday, anyone know of any good/reliable/quick mac repairers out there. May need to get a second cheaper opinion.
    Let me know.

  • does it boot up on its own?

    try zapping P RAM :

  • any geeks on this thread know when some faster Macpros will come out?

i just went to replace my 3 year old mac pro and found that there's still nothing with a faster clock-speed than the one i already have.

Westmere Xeons will be considerably faster than that of the older 1333 Xeons.

Just because the clock speed id the same, doesn't mean the performance will be the same. Increased Bandwidth and better utilisation of L2 and L3 cahche will improve perfomance. The processors may clock slower but they are able to take in a lot more information and complete a lot more maths than the old Xeon chips could.

  • this^ the new macbookpro's are only 2.2 but are nearly twice as fast as the old 2.5's due to faster ram, turbo-boost and different chip architecture. they actually outperform the current macpro's except perhaps for apps that can use all 6-8 cores of the higher end machines.

did you have a bootable clone on one of the other drives*?

can't remember what key you hold down but you can select the drive to boot from.

*good practice with a multiple drive machine.

  • Not if you wanna put a graph in a magazine... :[

Just finished one pretty quickly actually, I'm getting better at this... I normally just create them in inDesign but they insist on doing them properly here...

graphs in InDesign? They must look shiiiiiit ;)

  • Mr smyth that is far too forward thinking for mygoodself. Will sort that out for future variants of this machine, am actually thinking about claiming it back on my insurance if it can't be fixed..

Start up with your original installation disk, this will help you work out quite what is causing the problem.

  • Would love to except I can't see anything on screen so have no idea whether it's doing anything or falling over when it boots up.
Would booting up from the original start up disks in target mode make sense..

  • i would say you need about £1k of paid income to buy the software.

you'd need £1000 of paid income you can use to buy it, i don't know many people who casually have £1000 laying around waiting to be spent.

    . . . . mmmm, you need a working monitor.

Would booting up from the original start up disks in target mode make sense..

It would make no sense, target mode bypasses the system OS and effectively turns your Mac into a hard drive - that you can then connect (via Firewire) to another computer like any other hard drive.

If you want access to the original start up disks simply insert them into your laptop.

  • Help! Did you actually read my original request. Part of the problem is that there doesn't seem to be any vision being sent to the monitor. May actually have to take the monitor in as well so they can test that.

The overwhelming majority, if not all, of those who consider themselves professional users of Adobe software will be able to afford the software.

    A) What do you do for a living ?

    B) I am a Cabbie, did the knowledge over 20 years ago, been doing this all my life.

    A) Why haven't you got a cab, it must be a nightmare carrying around all those passengers on your back ?

    B) You'd need XXXX of paid income you can use to buy or rent a cab, I don't know many people who casually have XXXX laying around waiting to be spent.

    A) But London is full of blacks cabs.

    B) Sorry can't stand around talking, got a fat woman going from WC1 to Harrow to sort out.

    Yes, I read your OP.

Could be anything, the power supply (you will be surprised the effects a defective PSU can have on a computer) - the motherboard, the hard drive, the monitor - etc etc.

A (known) working monitor would help determine where the problem lies.

I've got a couple of spare fully functioning Cinema displays sitting around - I am near Old Street roundabout.

  • He's winding you up. How could he read the forum with no monitor?

    Cornelius has magical powers.

Shit, have I just been groomed again ? I trusted this guy, I told him everything, I gave myself fully to him, he said he was 7.

  • Help I'm going to see a friend in north London on Friday can pass by on the way back early afternoon, this doable... Monitor should fit in the big bag..

Unscrew the 'foot' stand thing (two alan fixings and off it pops) - it then becomes a completely flat single piece 21" x 14" x 2" - so should fit easily into a good size bag.

    Not very heavy at all.

  • Help! That's cool can you pm me your details address, mobi number and I'll text you Friday to let you know when I'll be down old st sides. Shouldn't be later than four pm

  • got my mpb re[laced - apparantly if you turn it upside down it will break

  • got my mpb replaced - apparantly if you turn it upside down it will break

Thats a well known fault, and the reason they don't sell any apple products in Australia

  • sony are now supporting the thunderbolt interface, so all those other electronics manufacturers who are scared to innovate will now jump on the bandwagon too.
