  • Can anyone recommend a WiFi extender / router / hub or whatever it’s called? I have a netgear nighthawk r7000 for our main house but I need WiFi in an outhouse too. I can run a cable or potentially extend WiFi if that will work well.

Would love to avoid reading up about network gubbins so plug and play + set and forget would be lovely

  • Second hand airport express?

  • Aren’t they old and slow by today’s standards?

Edit: it’s 802.11n so should be alright. Good tip, thank you!

  • I’ve got one of these in a draw if you're interested. Model A1264.

Let me know if you want it.

  • I keep trying to replace all mine but after a few rounds of research it always turns out they are still decent.

  • Thanks, will check those out!

  • Aren’t they old and slow by today’s standards?

Aren't we all old and slow by today's standards?

  • Thanks for the offer! Think I have to aim for a A1392 one though. Also I'm in Sweden so postage will be steep :/

  • No prob. Hope you find something suitable.

  • Picked up the LG 5K screen a while ago. No idea why I waited so long, the screen is incredible, such a step up from my 30" cinema display.

The wobble though, it's pissing me off. If you charge these kinda monies, sort the basics out. If I knew about it I'd prob go down the iMac route instead even if it'd be more expensive and less future proof. Just hammers in why I keep buying apple stuff.

  • I'm trying to send some videos to someone with an iPad via a Dropbox link and the screen is showing blank.

Total size is just under 500MB.

They're in MKV as they were converted from VHS.

Is that likely to be the issue? Or is it Dropbox? (They show on an Android mobile and on a PC browser).

I need to make this process as painless as possible so don't want to ask them any questions or ask them to do or download anything.

    Any suggestions?

I may still have an iCloud account, so wondered if you can upload to that and email a link.

    Any pointers much appreciated.

    Cheers.

  • Upload it to a streaming service like vimeo? That'll make sure it works on all devices and I think you can password protect videos as well

Not sure how .mkv works, but might be one of those formats where the whole file needs to be downloaded before it plays, and an iPad might struggle with 500mb of data

  • just use handbrake to convert the .mkv to an .mp4, and then upload to vimeo, and then send them a link from there or wetransfer the .mp4 file.

.mkv is a weird file format, and it's easier to just make it a .mp4 for viewing/transferring purposes.

  • Cheers.

They're old home movies so I'd want them to be private. I'll check out Vimeo.

TBH I'd never looked at the format as the majority went to DVD for my dad, but lesson learned.

    Thanks again.

  • you can make the videos you upload to vimeo, private/ password protected, and then whoever gets the link can download a version at their end.
Otherwise just wetransfer the file over, they get 7days to download and then it's gone..

  • Apparently you need a paid for subscription. Decided to pay for a few months so it's done.

  • Unless they've changed it I'm sure there's a free version with limited uploads.

You can also just upload to YouTube - should be able to take mkvs and YouTube has privacy settings that are just as robust as Vimeo.

And yes as above, you could convert them to mp4 or similar via a free tool like Handbrake and send via WeTransfer - they have free accounts with limits up to 2GB per send from memory.

If you've already paid for a Vimeo subscription then remember to cancel but also remember that you likely won't be able to access the videos after the subscription is done. You may also be tied into a minimum period of 12 months. They will also spam the ever living fuck out of you to upgrade to their other plans.

  • Will all the MacBook pro's have this stupid touch bar from now on?

  • Also why do some keys on my iPhone appear blue-ish all of a sudden and how do I undo this?

  • Also will there be a 15" Air this year and will it still have the fucking butterfly keys?

  • MacBook Pro 2019 has stopped responding to the USB-C connection on the Dell monitor I hook it up to. No charge, no USB hub, no display.

Tried connecting the cable from the monitor to the power adapter in an attempt to test the cable - MacBook will not charge from it. Works fine with the 'normal' charge cable.

What is the chances of the cable just spontaneously killing itself?

  • Higher than you might expect.
I've found USB-C/TB3 cables can be a real PITA.
Long story short, I replace my TB3 cables every year now.
