I asked the Google of the world about what Sol meant by teleport while specifically asking them it's something to do with a Macintosh, and found this;

I guess it's all about what you're used to, but 27" seems huge to me
got a 24" iMac at work, designing websites on that is great. My college has a 27", a website on that just looks like a colourful piece of bogroll down the middle of the screen
It's fine, you just need to keep testing jpgs in a browser that's the right size. The reality is that having a big screen allows you to work so much more efficiency, I save so much time never closing menus in photoshop - even being able to see ALL your layers in a really complex document is fucking awesome (no more, 'where did I put that and what did I name it?'). After having that working on a laptop is like having one hand tied behind my back.
If you're really struggling with the concept of visualising what it will look like on a small monitor just switch to a w1280 display in system preferences to check and switch back after

Or get the headphone port fixed? have you tried poking a needle into it? I seem to remember something like that working for my girlfriends mb.
I've just read this on another forum after a quick google:
Lols.
Not paying for spotify.Port reset, right oh. Cheers Dan!
EDIT: Thought just occurred to me that it could be my headphones...
Blonde moment.Reset port, tried new headphones. Still the earsplitting, head shuddering noise. Epic sads.

• #1480
did you try the headphone port after the reset?
Maybe tell people not to use mobile phones in your general area or buy a new sound card (it's probably what's causing the problem if it's a cheapo)?

Yep, headphone socket is kaput. I'm not sure it's mobile interference if none of the other macs pick it up.
Can't imagine IT will we go for changing the sound card, they haven't got a clue. Having said that, I've tried different external sound cards so it's probably not that. Wondering if it's a coincidence that the socket went and now this...
le sigh.
Thanks anyway Dan. -

Before I forget, If you are having trouble starting your Mac, hold down either "C" or "alt" when starting up, and it should help.

Me again.
Any idea why my page transitions aren't working in a .swf from Indy when viewing in a browser? -

Thanks anyway Dan.No, I just meant a new external sound card. If you only spent a few £ on it the first place from ebay then it's probably what's causing the interference - and it will be cheap to replace.

Thanks anyway Dan.If you're getting the same ear-splitting noises with multiple external soundcards it sounds like you may have a problem with your power supply or grounding somewhere. Does it still happen when it's running off battery power. Different power supply. Different building. What about an externally powered (i.e. not USB bus powered) audio interface or maybe a powered USB hub might help. Try a firewire audio interface, might be a problem with the USB bus.

I'm getting really frustrated looking for a monitor... Found a really good online guide here but it's so much money... :/
#scroogegot a security warning from that page Mr Slain - naughty.
LaCie 324 ftw.. if you can afford it. Refurb studio display seems sensible if not - what are you using it with?
edit - as in Mac Pro or MBP? Probably not worth getting a LaCie if it's going with a laptop

Cheers timmah.
I've just solved it and am currently enjoying some rather splendid music with a smile on my face.
As with most things, it's always worth thinking about the smaller issues first.
Ahem. -

It's for my MBP, I'm probably gonna go with Apple unless I can dredge a bargain up in the next few days... Where there's a will... ;]

the lacie 324 is a bit overpriced for a monitor without inbuilt hardware calibration (where the graphics card is bypassed and inbuilt circuitry takes over) the panel used is from NEC and they keep the best ones for their own spectraview range. there have been quite a few instances of a green/red colour shift across the panels too.
just set up a new imac for a photographer friend and the screen is brighter down the left hand side with a slight blue bias, not the end of the world as he's using an eizo with it.
one thing i did notice was after installing the OS update and applejacking (repairing permissions etc) it took nearly 20mins for it to run through all the permissions errors, i would have expected some slowdown in performance and a few bugs to appear very soon if i hadn't done this. not what you expect with a fresh install on a new machine.

User over complicating the problem.
Lets leave it there...;)

Cross posting from AQA thread as I thought I'd have more luck here:
I have a 24 inch iMac 6,1
Never needed to upgrade as I only use it at home for word processing, web and DVDs/Music (+ late night potato chopping for LFGSS)
For any video and graphics work I've always used gear provided to me by companies I work for or have hired in for a job.
I'm now in the process of setting up a small studio to use with a couple of friends/soon to be partners and can't afford yet to invest in a fully specced mac pro - was thinking that for moderate work - light edits this would be fine but want to know what I can get.
Currently:
Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.16ghz
2GB memory
250GB HDD
128MB nvidia GeForce 7300 GTAm I right in thinking that the max I could upgrade to is:
4GB RAM (200-PIN PC2-5300 DDRS (667MHz) SO-DIMM (2 x 2 GB sticks - even though it'll only support/use 3GB)
up to a 2TB HDD - SATA II drive
Possible to upgrade processor?
Possible to upgrade GFX card?
Possible to have additional ports on the back?
I.e. currently only 2 firewire ports + 3 x USB + Ethernet.
Any idea on costs or places to get this done? I'm fairly techy and have opened up and fiddled with dozens of PCs but never touch the innards of a Mac and am slightly afraid to.

could be worth getting a solid state drive as swap if you're doing video?
-
• #1497
You should becable to use 8 gb of ram. Try OWC for more info

can anyone recommend me a good case for a macbook pro?
preferably a hard case and not a zip-up sleeve type of thing. -
• #1500
I would probably get crucial ram. I've had no complaints with their brand.
also had some good luck with kingston value ram which used to be really really cheap.
