  • So i was gagging for a new MacBookPro when it was announced last year up to the point they introduced those new prices, back in the market and I've realised I have a 24 hr window to sacrifice British keyboard and an 8gb ram upgrade for an international keyboard and a £400 saving thanks to my sister in law moving back from HK this time tomorrow.

Will I miss that 8gb of ram? I've done the international keyboard before, it's ok.

  • Keyboard doesn't matter, 8gb certainly does though

  • Not sure if this has been covered already but I just got one of those new fancy MacBook 12" -- pretty slick. But then I realised that the cable required to connect HDMI or USB devices and charge simultaneously cost £69!

Amazon basics has a £27 version... does anyone have any experience with it?

  • Not had any experience with it, however is there any chance your display has DisplayPort? I'd venture a thunderbolt3 to DP cable is more appropriate and for that reason potentially cheaper.

  • Nobody buys Apple dongles unless you are

    1. Rich
    2. My asshole colleague who thinks nobody does better adaptors than Apple - back to 1.

I use HyperDrive but it has 2 USB-C connectors so won't work for the MacBook, see if you can get their MacBook version in the UK.

Or have a look at these, but then Amazon own brand can be suprisingly good sometimes, don't know...

  • Cool. Thanks for the tip. It's like, 'GUH apple, sometimes computers need ports!'

    but the MacBook is pretty!

  • 3- business expense

  • Not even that, we are not allowed to buy direct from Apple anymore...

  • Yeah but folks who own their own business' can...

  • True that... on a slightly unrelated subject, is it true that Apple deduct VAT refund down to 15% or thereabout? A friend visited London few monhts back and she wanted to buy an iPhone with Pounds being shit (she was literally laughing) and the effective 20% discount... Apple Covent Garden says that they would take a 5% handling fee to process her VAT refund, so effectively VAT refudn is only 15%. Isn't VAT refund sort of just done at the airport with showing receipts and maybe items?

I challenged them about what does their 'processing' entail, do we get the money back on the spot, and they said all they'd do is give us a VAT receipt so we get our money bakc at the airport, isn't that kind of the same as the till receipt?

  • I've got no idea on that one I'm afraid... my VAT gets deducted from how much I have to pay per 1/4.

  • so wanna do this to my imac

  • Claim back the VAT on it?

  • Sorry for the spam. I'm looking to buy a Macbook Air. If you have one to sell, message me.

  • I know we've gone though all this before, but apple are the absolute worst for passwords.
I need to upgrade my iCloud storage, but apparently my apple id and password are invalid (the ones it took fucking ages to re-set the last time, and I made sure I kept a record of), so the system has locked me out.
Now I can't even log in and reset my password -again- and it is telling me to try again later.

  • and now my session has timed out, so I need to request another authorisation code.
That is the fourth in half an hour.

  • Having an adapters headache.

Say i have a 27" Thunderbolt Display there now seems to be a usb c adapter so you can connect the display to usb c.

However am i right that this adapter only works for the newest macbook pro and NOT the newest macbook (12")?

  • I'm not sure its that simple... I read somewhere that thunderbolt 1 to thunderbolt 3 wont work despite adapters... they may be wrong though, I use mine on a 2017 13 MacBook Pro but its the 24inch Mini Display port...

  • Got my bog standard refurb nTB MBP a week ago. i5/8GB/256GB. Not too fussed with going the 256 option as it is removable on the non-touch, just a matter of time before the aftermarket works out how to replicate apples ssd controller.

Bit of a bonus - went to pick it up from the store and got chatting with one of the apple assistants about how I got it for study etc - he then mentioned that the refurbs aren't subject to edu discount (which I knew) but the applecare is! He dropped the applecare price for me. Refurb with 3 year discounted warranty. Not bad.

  • What's the discount for AppleCare now? It used to be so heavily discounted, I heard it's not so great now.

  • I'm in Aus - was about 8.5%.

  • same here in UK, 10% flat. It used to be 74% off until about 18 months ago...

  • My brand new MacBookPro 13 had a bit of a shit 5th day of ownership:
First of all I let my musette drop to the floor whilst trying to wrangle my dog into a car, small dent to corner, very disheartened. Later that night I knocked a can punk ipa all over the right hand side of the keyboard and didnt exactly clean this up thoroughly enough or even consider turning it off.
Can't really explain the recklessness, my last two macbook pros were sold on ebay for more than 80% of the purchase price due to the fantastic condition i normally keep my kit in. I'm just going to blame parenthood as the likely cause for the change in character.
Obviously turned down the option for Applecare+ at the time of purchase like a fucking idiot and now i have sticky keys.
I think this can be rectified with some home remedies, but i'm concerned about mention of 'logic board corrosion' after obligatory googling of such remedies.
So, does anybody know if im covered for accidental damage in any way shape or form? Can i extend my warranty within 30 days or anything? Should i not even worry about it?

You can buy AppleCare+ within 60 days of the purchase of your Mac
