I bought an iBook in 2006 and that came with iMovie, then I bought a MacBook in 2008 and that didn't, I think. I'm going to get a new MacBook in about a year probably, so don't want to get iMovie as it costs £71 and apparently now comes with MacBooks again.
I'm a bit annoyed. Can I get iMovie somewhere, or do I have to buy it?

Comes only as part and parcel with iLife I think. Same as Garageband. Deffo not available for free unless you go the dark side... btjunkie.org etc

Bugger. So I buy it now, and get a free copy with the new laptop? Damn you, Apple!

can I format any harddrive to use in a mac?
I've got to buy a new HD for my old powerbook. -

Yes, i bought one and followed IFixits instructions to install it. Then use the disk utility on the install disk to format it.

Bought iMovie for £71.
So far I've done one little edit, which cost £71. Tomorrow I'm doing one of my last tour, which will make it £35.50 each. Bargain.

No worries, apparently the 80g Toshiba drives have a history of dying. On the plus side i back up most important things and went from 80g to 150g drive in my PB G4 12'
The only bitch is reloading all the updates and such once you re-install the OS. Apparently the best way is to clone the complete system with Carbon Copy Cloner but i had not gone that far. Unfortunately PowerBooks can not boot from a USB drive so that kills alot of options when it comes to downloading OS X etc. I managed to get a copy of Leopard retail and fit it on single layer DVD (you delete the languages to get the space). Not had any issues so far using it. Same goes for iLife.
Cheers

Ahh used to run OS 9 through an USB stick on a G3, fun time.
Hell, it's the most portable computer ever, just unplug USB stick, go to uni, and plug it on the uni mac.
no need to carry laptop.

I need a student discount, so I can afford supped up 27" iMac.
Does it work with college students? I could give my MacBook to my stepdaughter and get the iMac on her. Or you need to be an uni student?

There are some comprable discounts on refurb iMacs, at least this was the case a few days ago. There was an i7 27" a few days ago with about £200 off, close to the uni discount.
That said, there is a discount for college student, but I don't know how much, you'd have to get her to access the apple store from the school's network:

There are a few other options. I did this when I had my iBook.
I basically created a partition on the end of my drive that was 9GB, then wrote the dmg image of leopard to that partition. I then told the mac to boot from that drive, and do a install from there (however you effectively lose 9gb on ur drive).
Optionally you can do the same thing with a external firewire drive.
You can also boot from a usb drive you can boot from that with a PowerPC mac ... it is not easy and involves using the OpenBIOS command (which IMO is superior than UEFI). I have successfully done it on a PowerBook g4 1.67 GHZ model for my ex-girlfriend ... but not on my iBook.

Refurb store - save up to 22%, better than student discount. Buy the applecare on ebay for £40-£50.
I did that a month or two ago - good deal.

I'm in the process of setting up my macbook to use in desktop mode as well, i.e. with monitor, mouse and keyboard.
Can anyone recommend a stand for the macbook to sit on (cheap/not too expensive) so air can circulate and I can use it as a second screen if the need arises.

I was looking for exactly the same thing a few months ago. Googling I found some funny examples of DYI stands.

Ha ha, some good DIY ones in there. Might see if I get some free time over the next few weeks I'll have a go at it.
Any other examples people?
