  • Just in case anyone thought that predict-and-provide was the right way to go:

    http://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/is-this-the-worlds-worst-tailback-thousands-queue-on-50lane-chinese-motorway-during-holiday-rush-a3085291.html

Obviously, the picture only tells a very limited story, but the more motor traffic capacity you build, the more motor traffic you get, and while the circumstances pictured are currently exceptional, there is no question in my mind that this kind of congestion will become routine as the trip distribution in the area served by the motorway is distorted by its provision and motor traffic increases.

I'd love to see some numbers on this. Must have a look.

  • That picture is a bit misleading as it doesn't quite show that there is a (really stupid) reason for the congestion, narrowing the 50 lanes down to ~6 after the toll booth. Not disputing the general conclusion, just highlighting that there is a more prosaic reason for this incident

  • Oh, I know--but that only highlights that they most likely invested in the toll gateway first, perhaps not expecting volumes to be that high just yet, fully expecting to widen the approaches later to a ratio that accommodates traffic egress when all booths are busy. My guess would be that this is an outcome of the scheme's phasing being outpaced by peak volumes on a national holiday.

  • If you look carefully you can just see the sales rep in the black BMW switching across 50 lanes....

  • I'm looking at the high res version and I think I can actually see that :)

  • ^^^^No lane markings yet quite ordered. Like to see that in the UK.

  • Valley of the scarecrows

    By Thomas peter

"Tsukimi Ayano stands in a scarecrow-filled classroom of a closed down school in the Japanese hamlet of Nagoro. Thanks to Ayano, the small and isolated village is experiencing an unforeseen population boom - but the new residents are not what you might expect.
Nagoro is now covered with humanlike scarecrows, all created by Ayano in the 13 years since she moved back to the village where she grew up, to help care for her mother. She originally started making them to scare animals away from her crops, but the dolls have taken on a life of their own, far outnumbering actual people in the hamlet. They stand in houses, fields, trees, streets, and at a crowded bus stop - waiting for a bus that never comes."

  • ..ha, nice!

  • Wind at 150 km/h and floods are putting villages on their knee in the north of the Philippines. This is the typhoon Koppu that, already registered as the second strongest of the year, resulted in 14 deaths and over 23 thousand displaced. The villages affected by Koppu are rural villages, inhabited mostly by farmers and ranchers. In addition to save their lives and the house, for them the emergency is another: to save the cattle, the source of livelihood for the entire family. So among children, women and elderly people who try to escape from the water, there are those who adventure to rescue pigs and chickens.

  • It's like a small family's photo album - a family of killer whales at risk of extinction - the one made by the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). It is a group that belongs to the Southern resident killer whales: spend part of the year in the area of the San Juan Islands, in the Pacific north of Seattle. Researchers at NOAA flew over some specimens of this population with a drone, managing to capture extraordinary images of the life of these whales together with their puppies, getting valuable documents about their behaviour: the swim side by side with small among adults nearly "in training" until such time as a mother breastfeeding her baby. The group of Southern resident is considered at risk of extinction due to the reduced number of individuals but, according to NOAA, the last period there has been a small 'boom' of births. The population of 81 specimens would in fact, five more than last year.

  • In the second arrondissement of Paris, away from the red-light districts and close to the center the Beverley is the last porno cinema in the city and one of the last in Europe. The owner and projectionist is Monsieur Maurice Laroche. Seventy years, a passion for the genre film and a decent collection of 35 mm to display in his room. Twelve euros for twelve hours of projection, the audience - almost all men, from the very young to grandparents waiting to go to take the grandchildren from school - may come and go as you please. From 15 to 18 the room is almost always sold out. Who goes to Beverley loves vintage eroticism, not coincidentally the films shown are all of the 60s, 70s and 80s. One way to keep alive the imaginary over the overwhelming power of the online porn, free and "without a soul", explains Monsieur Maurice.
