  • no photos of your bike cave area

I don't think it brought the photographer joy ;)

We could have tidied it up more and made it look better with hindsight but it is a functional space. I do think it's a good selling point though.

  • Can your neighbours see you in the bath?

No - the larch slats + angles mean that we can't be seen by upstairs in the bath or next door in the toilet.

  • There appears to be a lot of weeding that needs to happen.

  • @Fox as an avid browser of the MH website I find sometimes (and more recently) the photos can look a little greyer. I'm not a photographer so this is probably just to do with light conditions etc

If they cannot re-do it I would just remove this one:

The rest of the shots with the garden are fine enough (though shame it's November and not in full bloom as it was early summer). The place looks mint, so just trying to be helpful and not wanting to pile in!

  • That's the one that made me feel sad.

  • Very strange, felt like its such a long time coming that when you finally move in you've almost forgotten what the place looks like!

Yes it's all just ideas at this stage, but so glad to finally be in!

I hope you're place is starting to feel like home too.

  • I always laugh at the fact I've spent longer weighing up the decision to buy a certain jacket or pair of trainers than I did at the 15-20 minute viewings for both of the largest purchases of my life

  • Missed an opportunity for some fairy lights and a repro of a local road sign right there...

  • Seems like Modern House just don't know how to photograph exterior timber without making it look a bit fucked. The same grey look can be seen on the link shared in the Architecture thread

  • Surly it'll be faster to just photoshop some colour and a fig tree in.

Joking aside it's a good illustration of what a long and arduous task it is to make a wild flower garden that looks good. I'm going to try my best this year with the spot I normally give over to long grass.

    (Excuse the mess it's WIP)

  • What was the thought process for the bathroom extension? Was there anything there before?

  • Yeah - @Fox actually inspired us to try a wild garden meadow at one side and the end of our garden - so far it's long grass, a few green shoots and weedy looking things crylaughing.emoji

  • Ha that was one of the exact ones I was referencing

  • It could be the aesthetic they intended. And I know I am not their target demographic, so that's probably why/inconsequential to the fact I don't like it.

  • check out beebombs.com . wild flower seed packs

  • I hope you're place is starting to feel like home too.

We have a microwave, fridge, washing machine and cooker now so things are already starting to get easier.

  • It's been asked a lot I know but, what free software are people using to mock-up room layouts? Apart from SketchUp. I've seen some great kitchen designs here the last few weeks.

  • Counterpoint - unpainted timber cladding always looks shit after a few years anyway

  • I agree, that's exactly the kind of thing that comes to mind when I see those photos. I just thought (based on no knowledge of fancy house selling or photography), that they could make an effort to make it look less like that instead of more. The shed and decking here are 4 years old, but have a bit of colour to them still.

  • Half a Mill! Sadly I don’t think I have enough feet. Comforting that we do have the same living room chairs so I have hygge aspirations at least.

  • It’s a sentō

  • Yeah I went big on these - think I planted too late in the year to get a good bloom but I'm reasonably hopeful for spring time.

  • Recently turned 42, never owned my own home before, there have been 4 flats I've been in the process of buying in my life that have all fallen through due to some fuckery or other completely out of my control.

For some reason the banks in Finland actually wanted to lend me money despite me only having lived consistently here for just over a year at the time of offering, and owning a start up business with highly variable income.

Corona put the search on hold for a while, no one was really putting anything on the market, but late in the summer stuff started to appear again and after a bit of fannying around I found somewhere. I really like the traditional wooden houses, but apparently they can be total money traps, but then I found a 'modern' 1990s build wooden house, built by the previous owner themselves, that hadn't been getting much attention as it's only 2 bedrooms, which didn't suit the typical detached house market of families.

Less than a month later, it's mine!
