  • Also where is the video of @Señor_Bear on telly?

  • Oh on a range. We’re just going to stick an additional induction in. It is great when precision is needed, but gas is so much more versatile.
(Aubergine, toasting stuff, stir fries, etx)

  • We have induction cooktop for safety.
My GF's mother lives with us because she had a stroke and is partially disabled. With induction she cannot burn herself on an element.
Maybe something to think about if there are children or seniors around.

  • Pretty sure that's a thing as a hob. Not sure about a range/cooker, thought I suppose you could always mount a gas burner in the worktop next to it.

  • Modulation, being able to set timer, piss easy to clean

  • After singing it’s praises I’ve noticed that my induction can’t heat my biggest pans all the way to the edge. A 30cm cast iron pan and a humongous de buyer wok. Quite annoying because they get hot in the center.

  • Gas hobs are dead?

  • They died in 2019 summer I am afraid. The only gas in this house is inside me after generous helping of chickpea curry.

  • Wait no my boiler is gas.

  • Anyone replaced their boiler with an air source heat pump? Apparently there are some systems where you can keep your existing radiators so less disruptive to install.

  • I wouldnt say so, I fitted 1 and a range last week.

  • The SKS would be great but is 128cm so no good. It’s also £12000

  • Just started a free "green your home" course with https://selce.org.uk - 1 session in but they're being recorded I think. Might have some info on ASHP. They don't seem to mind if you live southeast or not.

As I understand it though, ASHP gives out low heat so there's no point installing it until your house has very good thermal conservation (insulation and air tightness).

  • I am in a modern flat, so very well insulated but my hot water is via a ASHP, room heating via convection heaters. The ASHP has been in 8 years and seems to of been problem free but it is pretty big compared to a boiler given that it only does hot water so needs an airing cupboard or loft to have the tank in that it is heating and obviously it isn't very responsive, so like growing up before combi boilers, if you all have showers and use the up the hot water, you are bang out of luck, it does have an immersion element you can flick on for an hour for such situations. I almost never have that issue as it is only two of us but can imagine a family would have issues.

  • Are they loud?

All of the ASHP units I've seen look like massive aircon units with big fans... I'm in a totally silent street where you can hear a fox fart at night... I've got a chance to think of green things like an ASHP over the next few months (already having boiler work done) but my concern is noise and vibration from the fan unit. This place being so unerringly quiet that any noise will be noticeable.

  • induction all the way - but invest in some proper pans. you can't use shitty thin pans with bolt-on handles. need to have a solid thick base. I would recommend circulon

  • I've currently got a range cooker - the double oven 6 hob thing, its fantastic and having a house full is when it comes into its own.

However cleaning the thing is a complete pain in the arse, for that reason I'll be going induction in the new place, even though it means having a smaller oven overall.

  • Mine is loud. The fan/air con looking bit is outside and I can hear it through the (admittedly old) double glazing. There is also a huge box about the size of an american fridge in the basement. In a few years I’d like to change it to mountain (ground) source.

  • Yeah, that's what I thought... probably just going to stick with gas :shrug

  • Great news! Yeah It's funny to think how long its been since I viewed the property!

Fingers crossed for you too, looks like we're both completing on the same day!

  • I have considered using a moving company, but on first thought, I haven't got that much stuff...

  • I've recently got an induction hob and in some ways it's great. Super easy to clean, really powerful on the boost setting and very easy to get fine control of the temperature.

I don't like cooking on it as much as gas though. It's a bit harder to gauge what's going on without the flame (although I imagine this will come with practice) and, as someone else mentioned, the "heating" area doesn't match some of my bigger pans so don't heat up the whole pan evenly.

  • The uneven heating is not really just a problem with induction.
    This is on gas:

  • I'd have previously said gas.

I've always done the majority of the kitchen cleaning, but now do it 99% of the time and it's getting old.

Tl;Dr gas if you have a cleaner and don't care about the environment.
