  • PM on way.

  • Exterminators worked. They did 3 treatments, i think about 6 weeks apart and it sorted the problem. We also replaced the carpet throughout the entire flat.

  • Merci! Doing a bangin' kitchen just now, very exciting.

  • I say PM. I mean email.

  • Moths love dark spaces. Boxes, bags, wardrobes, the backs of pictures and furniture...

Keep the clothes out in the open

  • Can the suits etc that you need to be right on the day be dry-cleaned at a shop. That should kill anything off that is waiting to chow down on your crotch. If they can be left there and collect them as close as you dare to the day to be sure they're bug free. Mothballs still work in this day and age to keep the adults out.

  • @NurseHolliday Get everything into a deep freeze. Honestly don't fuck about. If it doesn't fit in yours maybe your folks place? Will only need to be in for a day.

Decontaminate everywhere and freeze/hot wash everything. Silk and wool is what those bastards love so if you have some of that shit that you're not wearing often get a vacpac bag and shove it there.

I've not used the smoke bombs but that seems to be a sensible shout.

  • @Fahrgestell That armchair is from Hay - the other one I'm looking at is from Normann but is pricey at £1k.

We ordered the sofa from bluesuntree and it's nice but not super comfy - though it's wearing in nicely...

  • So basically I'm a bit worried about one of the new suits being dry cleaned as it has some delicate bead work on it, but everything else has been dropped off at the dry cleaner this morning.

  • Yeah I think I'll take some stuff round to my parents house and get it in the freezer there.

Got the vacbags but there's nothing to fold and put in them from that cupboard, but I will freeze jumpers and merino from the bedroom and get them in there.

  • @NurseHolliday Bomb everything! My number 1 enemy is the moth.

The sticky strips disturb the reproductive cycle of moths for 1 generation. I have them up and around regardless.

I've bombed and that seemed to work.

I then moved house and sprayed everything, every single item and have individually bagged all my merino (snap lock) and periodically fit them in the freezer for a night.

I've got bags on everything and have moth strips up hanging with the hanger clothes.

I periodically get the spray, spray in the wardrobe and close the door. That's also seemed to work.
I haven't seen moths in the new house, and it's been a year.

I am due a spray session, might go do that now...

  • @NurseHolliday It's possible to beat them, takes a load of effort though. I successfully exterminated moths that had survived one flat move with me. Another flat move and 2 years later they still haven't returned).

    1. Wash all clothes, bedding, sofa throws etc. Twice - a few days apart. At 90degs.
    2. Whatever you can't wash: freeze; dry clean; throw away. Do that again a few days later.
    3. Clean and bleach wardrobes, drawers etc. Oh, and then do it again a few days later.
    4. Fumigate (i just used some off the shelf spray can).
    5. Repeat 1-4 about 6 weeks later.
  • There's got to be another way?

    We did this.
Spent about £200 on dry cleaning.

    No difference.

  • Thanks for the tips. So I'm missing a trick by only concentrating on that one room? I need to do all clothes in every room?

  • The sticky traps aren't for getting rid but are good for monitoring - so put some in every room. Anything you're very precious about (wedding suits x2) keep in the freezer. Seriously. And I thought it needed a couple of weeks, I don't think a day would kill eggs. But just leave them in there, it's the safe zone.

I don't believe this 'getting rid' thing, especially if you live at ground floor level there's hundreds of the bastard things trying to get in every night...

  • I'm planning to have some external painting done. It's quite a lot of work - sanding, filling, good quality paint. It's two bay windows and surrounds at the front of the house, below the bay at the front, porch, door, and three window sills/surrounds at the back of the house.

I have a quote, but has anyone had some similar work done that can provide a very rough guide on what you should expect to pay?

  • Chest freezers are pretty cheap on Gumtree, is it stupid to buy a £40-50 freezer just to combat moths?

  • Walthamstow

  • If you have the means to collect and deliver, you'll get your money back when you sell it in a month.

  • True, I guess I'm buying a chest freezer.

  • strawberry and rhubarb is here, blackberry season is coming...if u have the space, keep the freezer!

  • Buy a radio jammer and you can sit there crashing them at will
